Owen Gleiberman Variety The director, Sean McNamara, keeps hitting the most ragged of cliché notes. Jun 6, 2020 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com This premise would excel far better, and go much deeper with its targeted themes, in something like a dark comedy; that Mighty Oak embraces this delusion with no sarcasm and a lot of wish fulfillment is at the very least worrisome. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 5, 2020 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews Mighty Oak favours clichés, odd characterisation and unlikely mystical revelations over what could have been the inspiring story of a 10-year-old rock n'roll prodigy. Rated: 2/5 Sep 30, 2023 Full Review David Gonzalez The Cinematic Reel Mighty Oak is not reinventing the wheel nor is it a cinematic marvel, but, what Mighty Oak does right is present a good family movie, one that is easily accessible to all age ranges. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 18, 2022 Full Review Kathy Fennessy Video Librarian Magazine ...things don't click the way they should, possibly because the film often seems too lightweight for adults and too heavy for kids. Rated: 2/4 Aug 15, 2021 Full Review John Serba Decider A tonally incongruous mishmash of clumsy comedy, burnt-to-a-crisp melodrama and half-assed conceptual flim-flammery. DJ H The movie comes across as an after-school special blended with a sentimental movie for the Hallmark Channel. It's cute, sentimental, and adorably cheesy. Since the vast majority of the movie is filmed on location in many suburban neighborhoods of San Diego, it quickly made me feel homesick. I was born and raised in southern California. Many of the locations appearing in the movie are familiar territory for me. Shout out to Lestat's Coffee! A favorite restaurant of mine is located right across the street from the Lafayette Hotel, which is prominently featured toward the end of the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/22 Full Review Sergio C This story has So much potential but poor execution, no chemistry between characters at all.. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/22 Full Review Audience Member While it's not really anything at all interesting, or fresh. It's very entailed with heart, and stellar perfomances, namely from Alexa Penavega, and her husband. It passed the time here and there, it's material was all over the place, but Might Oak is worth a watch if you need something to watch to pass the time, or for casual viewing. It was fun here and there, and I'd recommend it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Cute story but the acting was awful all around. I have no idea how the guy playing the grandfather got the role, he can't act. It is a good movie to pass the time when you are feeling brain dead. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolute must watch idk why people hate sean McNamara movies they are so good really guys must watch Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review brent m When it comes to this family-oriented/young adult comedy-drama, the film's heart may be in the right place, but its execution could use some work. This story of a rock guitarist prodigy who may well be the reincarnation of a rising star killed in a car accident a decade earlier touches on some serious and thoughtful subject matter, but that material is often cheapened by attempts at softening it to make it less intense and more youth-friendly. What's more, the family-friendly aspects are occasionally intruded upon by decidedly more adult material, making for an odd combination of story elements. Add to that production values, writing, acting and direction that come straight out of a made-for-cable movie, and you've got an even stranger concoction. Yet, for all these shortcomings, "Mighty Oak" genuinely seems sincere enough in its attempt to tell a heartfelt and insightful tale that will appeal to its apparent target audience. So, if you can look past these issues, you'll find a modestly entertaining offering that's likely to please those who it was made for, as well as those with a mystical bent. Just don't expect epic filmmaking. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
