When Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) arrives in Frankie's gym seeking his expertise, he is reluctant to train the young woman, a transplant from working-class Missouri. Eventually, he relents, and the two form a close bond that will irrevocably change them both.

Namrata Joshi Outlook The film does obliquely posit a new model of womanhood, one about risking the all-important beauty for a larger mission. But more than Maggie, the show actually belongs to the guilt-ridden Frankie... Rated: 3/4 Jan 8, 2019 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian A heartfelt, creditable picture. Rated: 3/5 Feb 27, 2015 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald I don't think it's his masterpiece, but it's a big, beautiful, sad film with unforgettable performances. Feb 27, 2015 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Million Dollar Baby is emotionally gut-punching and holds up as one of the best films of the 21st century. Rated: 5/5 Dec 30, 2024 Full Review Mark Johnson Awards Daily An authentically earnest film about desperate and failed characters looking for humanity and salvation from each other, both inside and out of the ring. Jun 27, 2023 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site The characters Eastwood plays are not answerable to anyone, except themselves. As long as they pull a long face, furrow their brows and look pained after the fact, they are permitted to commit any number of crimes. Feb 15, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Emil P Amazing masterpiece. It was slow in some parts, but it didn't matter that much. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review C C I detest this movie, or any movie that emphasizes ugliness the way this one does. Depressing plot, dismal ending, and littered with cliche characters (the cantankerous coach, his loyal sidekick, the bully picking on the handicapped boxer, the dirty competition, the scheming family, etc., Swank's Maggie being the sole exception). Seeing this movie once was one time too many. The worst Best Picture winner in Oscar history. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/03/25 Full Review Neil C Eastwood is an absolute master storyteller and this may be his masterpiece. Along with Grab Torino, Flags of our Fathers & The Mule. You almost don't know why the movies our so engaging, but you just don't want to miss a moment. Excellence! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Kevin P God damn, I have no words. This movie hit as hard as the punches thrown by the boxers. It starts off as such a charming and uplifting sports underdog adventure and then cuts you deep two thirds in with its heartbreakingly grounded aftermath to one particularly nasty fight. Most movies would spend maybe like 5, 10, 20 minutes tops with the hospital scenes. But this movie really lets it sink in the tragic and grim realities of medical recovery and the things that might be lost for good. Contrasted poignantly with Morgan Freeman’s battle scars being just light enough to grant him enough functionality and freedom to keep on living a healthy and normal life. The movie is Clint Eastwood at his best with all the humorous gruff n’ tough Clint mixed in with some real heart with both Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman’s characters. You also get a really good understanding of the careful techniques and physical precision behind boxing. How it’s not just brute strength, but careful and diligent manipulation of the body and mind. That gentle guitar music opens and bookends the movie on such a bittersweet note with just enough hope to ease you through the pain the characters endured. It’s a beautiful movie and easily one of Clint Eastwood’s best works, as well as one of the best sports dramas I have ever seen. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Jürgen H The film portrays the power of a dream, of womanhood, of great odds against adversity.... It it is extremely well put together by master class performances from Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood.... It is a film that is imprinted in your mind forever.... a real Clint Eastwood masterpiece. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Drew B A very good movie that I think needed a different ending. That would take it from a very good movie to being an all time great movie. I do like this movie a lot though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
