Critics Consensus

Critics say the weirdness of The Million Dollar Hotel is more grating and pretentious than interesting. Also, it takes too long to get to the conclusion.

Jonathan K @aFIREintheattic 4d The music is the real star here, and the way Wim Wenders pairs it with the pacing and the shots is great. Especially how it sits alongside the dialogue and narration. There is a timing and rhythm to a lot of the lines that lays over the music almost like a vocal. I am not even that big of a U2 fan, nor Bono, but what he did with the music here, the silences he writes into it, and the way the soundtrack pulls in other artists like Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau gives the film a distinct character just from the music alone. I also thought the performances were really good, particularly the hotel residents and the lead actor. They are perfectly weird. Strange physical mannerisms, odd vocal noises, offbeat pacing, just very strange overall. Sometimes it's genuinely funny, and sometimes there are moments of real beauty. But it's not without flaws. I don't love that the narration is mixed so far back that you can barely hear it, though that seems intentional... I was wrong See more Maciej J Jun 7 It's one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen though it is filled with sadness and despair. Or perhaps because of this. A movie that is poetry as well. See more Robert L Mar 13 The Million Dollar Hotel: A Diamond in the Rough, Marred by Critics' Ego Wim Wenders' 2000 film, The Million Dollar Hotel, is a mesmerizing tale of eccentricity and humanity, set against the backdrop of a dilapidated Los Angeles hotel. Despite its flaws, the film shines with a quirky charm, thanks to standout performances from Jeremy Davies and Milla Jovovich. Unfortunately, the film's unique beauty was lost on many critics, who chose to indulge in pompous grandstanding rather than genuine analysis. Their scathing reviews reeked of elitism, as they savaged the film's unconventional narrative and stylistic choices. In reality, The Million Dollar Hotel is a captivating, if imperfect, gem that defies easy categorization. It's a film that rewards patience and open-mindedness, offering a rich tapestry of characters and themes. Rating: 3 half /5 Recommendation: Ignore the naysayers and experience The Million Dollar Hotel for yourself. Its offbeat charm may just win you over. It saddens me that people can’t grasp the beauty of the pure love despite the cruelty of the world.
