Critics Consensus

Mimosas' ambiguous storytelling may dissatisfy viewers looking for a clear destination, but opulent photography and an authentic sense of folklore make the journey unforgettable.

Simran Hans Observer (UK) Plot is not the takeaway from Mimosas, which reminded me of Abbas Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry, another slow-winding ramble through the mountains. Rated: 2/5 Aug 27, 2017 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Certain scenes look as if they have been improvised on location and there is something exasperatingly non-committal and provisional about it. But it certainly looks wonderful. Rated: 3/5 Aug 25, 2017 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies Mimosas is a languid, lightly experimental affair whose central conceit remains rooted in myth and folklore. Rated: 3/5 Aug 25, 2017 Full Review Joni Blyth One Room With A View Like the mountains the caravan travels through, Mimosas is lofty, grand, and tremendously inaccessible; the film deserves credit for how resolutely it commits to being a challenging watch. Rated: 2/5 Mar 13, 2019 Full Review Michael McNeely That Shelf The Moroccan landscapes are sure to impress, particularly on the big screen. Feb 21, 2019 Full Review Alexa Dalby Dog and Wolf Shot in stunning scenery of vast plains, moonlit lakes and forbidding mountains, visually it's breathtaking but it moves at patience-testing speed with non-professional actors and ultimately Laxe leaves the meaning open to interpretation. Audience Member Mimosas is a movie project that insists you take it for what it is; enigmatic, ethnographically and geographically arresting, with an ambiguous moral sense. The visuals range from gorgeous views of the Atlas Mountains as characters wend their way through them, to desolate 'sandscapes'. In the words of Jeanette Catsoulis- "The sum is a movie that panders not at all to Western sensibilities, giving few pointers on a theme beyond the fortifying power of faith." 2.8 stars Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Jolene Obviously everyone who did a critique on this movie doesnt know what theyre talking about or what they watched. The actors or authentic ragtag Moroccans. The tribes, barbarians, bandits and thieves or accurately pretrade. This film is about reaching into your inner sanctum to find God its about religion enlightenment its about believing in something bigger than yourself its about trust its about doing things with the right intentions its about trials and tribulations. Its about overcoming adversity and believing in something bigger than yourself. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/20 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful cinematography upon which a story that is a little bewildering. In the end I think all our main characters are dead. I think this movie is a commentary on having faith and what it means to be a man...(maybe). The end of the film is a puzzle to me. I am still wondering what that last shot was trying to convey. The best parts of the movie to me were the party walking on the rocks and in the water. Those scenes felt like a peaceful meditation on life and it's meaning. Beautiful landscapes if nothing else. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Great movie with an almost biblical mood, seen in the independent movie festival BAFICI.
