Derek Smith Slant Magazine This beautiful presentation of Vittorio De Sicas fantastical portrait of poverty and human fortitude helps make the argument that the film is more than just a curio in neorealist history. Apr 16, 2022 Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker This satire on the cravings of rich and poor alike is also a cry of despair; De Sica's celestial visions suggest that nothing short of a miracle will save those in need. Apr 13, 2020 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times Although this uncommon vein of fancy is a way from De Sica's previous line, the great director has brought up from his digging a liberal return of purest gold. Mar 25, 2006 Full Review Michael Calleri Niagara Gazette The character-driven tale flows forward with charm and energy and quite interesting special effects. Jun 3, 2022 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk an uneasy mix that doesn’t entirely work, but you can’t fault De Sica for trying something different and unexpected while still maintaining his essential imperative of respecting the dignity of the everyday world through cinematic representation Rated: 2.5/4 May 10, 2022 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness ... hope, peace, and honest sincerity, that same joy comes with a dark-tinge: where could they land that would accept a group of vagabonds? In todays society, as in post-World War II Italy, the answer may just depress you. Apr 18, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Dani G Very positive, heartfelted movie, with the recurrent De Sicca's themes of that time, but in less tragical fashion than others Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/08/23 Full Review J. D This sweet, uplifting story grabbed me right from the start. Lolotta, a kindly older woman with an exuberant and infectious love for life, finds the infant Toto in her cabbage patch and adopts him. They seem a match made in heaven, and she seems the perfect maternal figure to nurture and expand Toto's gifts for empathy, organization, optimism, fun and leadership. When she dies, Toto moves to an orphanage, eventually moving to live in a shantytown on the outskirts of Milan where he quickly becomes the cohesive force in this financially poor but spiritually rich community. Tension between these creative, loving folks and the upper-crust of Milan leads to the main conflict, the resolution of which is a wonder to behold. A gem of a movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/27/21 Full Review Audience Member Miracle in Milan is a movie that has one of those heart-warming characters with an indomitable spirit who brightens the lives of everyone around him. I quite liked how Francesco Golisano played this character because he never acts as though this is a struggle for him, he simply is kind and optimistic as a part of his nature. The film starts off somewhat comical, but otherwise perfectly normal as the people living homeless in Milan seek a way to survive. I was charmed by this whole section of the film, and seeing the way that the human spirit fought to live a normal life despite not having all the modern conveniences that money provides. There is also a fun contrast when we see these poor people interacting with the rich and privileged people who want to take possession of the land. A meeting in the big city was one of the most humorous scenes in the film, as we see these homeless people in the most over-the-top opulence. The turn for the film comes later when a magical element is added to the story. This is where things got weird. I liked the idea of empowering our hero in a unique way, but his new-found ability kind of shifted the tone and even the plot of the film. Suddenly, it was looking at how greed could entrap even those who once knew how to live with nothing. But it never felt the script fully addressed how damaging this behavior was to the people as they received everything that they thought would make life better. Also, the original plot is still happening, but it seems the importance of it is diminished. I wouldn’t mind a kind of Monkey’s Paw story, where someone is given magical powers that end up ruining life when it was supposed to help, but it is not the plot I was invested in from the outset. Then the ending is extremely odd and leaves me with more questions than answers. I definitely liked elements of Miracle in Milan, but if it remained focused in one direction or the other I would have enjoyed it more. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/20/20 Full Review Audience Member My favorite film and impossible to find on dvd Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A gem from Italy that bridges realism with fantasy. An orphaned boy grows up in a shantytown. A great story between those who have and those who have not. Beautifully photographed and the town is well constructed too. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
