David Ansen Newsweek The loopy contrivance of this plot is exacerbated by the broadness with which Streisand directs Richard LaGravenese's script. The slapstick manner collides queasily with the therapeutic tone. Feb 26, 2018 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune [Barbara] Streisand's direction is solid, save for a needless run-on ending over the final credits, and cinematographers Dante Spinotti and Andrzej Bartkowiak make New York City sparkle. Nisha Y As a long time film lover it is easy enough to join the chorus of critics about this spoon full of sugar for the never-been-marrieds and other unlucky-in-love audiences. The thing is, despite its obvious missteps and contrivances, it remains extremely watchable and I actually think it takes a profound stance about beauty and desire in light of the original film which inspired it. Instead of the transformed beauty returning dutifully to motherhood, we have a leading lady that gets what she wants, and that being something that she ultimately always had. Even though the dialogue leads the audience to conclusions in an at times uncompromising and obvious way, when you appreciate what happens between the words there is a complex implied psychology that leaves room for multiple interpretations. Don't get me wrong, it is light fluff, over done at times, but it is worth more than what many critics have said about it, which is the crux of the film anyway, some people, like some films, may only ever be loved by one person or a few people, but if that love does comes along, there lies a possibility that that love goes beyond the comprehendible, and deep into the truth of love and desire. This is also one of the few films that maintains throughout an ability to keep age out of the equation of the pursuit of love. And thank you Barbra for travelling down the beautiful manscape that is Jeff Bridges. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Amanda L This was a very interesting film. I can’t think of another instance where the payoff was so gratifying because the shift in tone was so radical. Granted, there is humor throughout, but the pivot from improbable plotting to a deeply moving denouement caught me off guard to the point of tears. Of course such a unique progression would have been impossible without the subtle powers inherent in Streisand’s, Bridges’ and Bacall’s performances. Sheer magnetism all around. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Pam P I am currently reading Streisand’s autobiography and she does a chapter about directing and starring in this movie. So I rented it last night since I never saw it in 1996. I was disappointed after paying Amazon Prime to watch it. There was no chemistry whatsoever between Barbra and Bridges who played her husband. It was a stellar cast but they couldn’t carry the movie. All in all I didn’t find the movie very believable. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Munkhchimeg T Liked the movie, wonderfulll Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Erik J I thought the first half was superbly and crisply written, profound, compelling, well-directed and acted. But the second half was too dragged out, overstated and overindulgent. Had the movie been 20 minutes shorter I would have given it five stars. For the record, it gained a half star overnight after I slept on it. It took me a little while to process why the main character initially thought of herself that way, and how she had a revelation.
