      Critics Consensus

Mister America misses a number of its targets, but fans of Tim Heidecker's unique brand of comedy will find moments worth savoring in this dry political satire.

Samantha B Better luck next year Timmy Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/19 Full Review Audience Member Absolute masterpiece Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Best mockumentary I've seen in quite some time. These characters have been so fleshed out over the past several years in On Cinema, and to see them get dropped into a real-world setting adds new layers to them that we haven't seen yet, despite the dozens of hours of content we've already seen from them. To continue finding new perspectives and new ways to surprise your audience after this many years is a sign that you've made something special. I laughed throughout, but I did not expect to feel so many mixed emotions at the ending. Pulling Tim and Gregg out of their usual setting makes them seem so much more pathetic and sad, and the final scene was emotionally effective in a way that I really did not anticipate. I'd give this five bags of popcorn (because the scale only goes to five), and a little American flag lapel pin. Thank you Tim and Gregg! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Jordan E Hilarious mockumentary about a bone-headed, fake-macho, buffoon running for DA. I give it 5 bags of popcorn and a bottle of Bud Light Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/19 Full Review Audience Member I loved it! A great continuation of On Cinema for the big screen. This is an easy five bags with maybe a diaper you can wear in the theater so you don't have to miss anything "when nature calls". (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, 1995, 144 minutes, 5 bags) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Gregg finally gets his shot on the big screen and does not disappoint! He takes down that bum Tim and gets in an inspired On Location segment featuring, you guessed it... Oh God! (1977) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Nicolas Rapold Film Comment Magazine If Heidecker's not holding a mirror up to our idiocy Borat-style, there's no mistaking the echoes in a thin-skinned, name-calling brute elbowing his way onto political center stage for the ugliest reasons. Nov 19, 2019 Full Review Ignatiy Vishnevetsky AV Club Running only a little shorter than the average season of On Cinema At The Cinema, it's never as cringe-inducingly funny or inventive as the webseries that spawned it. Rated: C+ Oct 9, 2019 Full Review Carson Lund Slant Magazine The long and circuitous narrative history of the so-called OCU weighs heavily on Eric Notarnicola's film. Rated: 3/4 Oct 9, 2019 Full Review Randall King Winnipeg Free Press This is cringey comedy, and the cringe factor is taken up a few notches in this narrative spinoff. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 27, 2020 Full Review Dan Schindel Hyperallergic To anyone who doesn't find this to their taste, this can be weird, if not outright alienating. For those who can appreciate it, this is an unquestionable masterpiece. Feb 28, 2020 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film There's no additional wit here, no insider perspective and no investment in character. Most of what we're presented with was improvised and that's what it looks like -- a small group of not particularly charismatic actors winging it.
