Narawit Max P Was there any Thai film after this that keeps the approach of focusing on a protagonist chasing their dream? I think this is quite exceptional! A brilliant portrayal of 19th-century Thai working-class culture :) Really love the bravery of the storyline, displaying how a working-class' life is more closely intervened with drugs, gambling, and trading off with bodies (in many senses). Also, excellent use of music! This is probably the best musical film I have seen in my life. The songs just fit in naturally. The beginning and ending are flawless. Only parts in the middle are a bit lengthy. The protagonist actress is really the best! Her facial expression really (I mean really) touches me. Finally, one of the nicest things in this film is when they broke the fourth wall. Never seen this for so long!!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/22 Full Review Audience Member This was a fun movie and really beautiful and tragic tale on the fruitlessness of finding something perfect when you already have one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Like his Japanese counterpart Takashi Miike (who would star in his next film, Last Life in the Universe) Ratanaruang demonstrates he is a master of mulitple genres with a heady mix of musicals, crime thrillers, romantic comedies and documentary into a cohesive whole. Particularly loved the Thai film dubber and a battalion of soldiers singing the luk thung classic Mai Leum. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A kinda Thai Candide. I'll always love it. Lived in Thailand for over 12 years and most Thai movies are crap, save for some other Pen-ek, original BKK Dangerous, Isaan Special, and Apichatpong (interesting but not always ones I'll go back to) Anyway, despite the crappy cover, it's a great little film and a good ending (very rare in these parts) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Dave R Amazing film, episodic and picaresque and a little bit soap opera, like a more grown up version of Slumdog Millionaire, without the cop-out cheesy song and dance ending. Actually, the use of music in this film is much better throughout, and the final scene's the best thing about this film - brilliant performance from the leading lady - neither 'bittersweet' nor 'heartwrenching' even come close to describing it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/10 Full Review Audience Member Tough life for poor and uneducated people in Thailand Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
