9-year-old Eva (Thora Birch) dreams of owning a pet, but her mother (Mimi Rogers) doesn't think she's ready and her father (Christopher McDonald) is allergic to animals. One day, she finds a lost capuchin monkey, names him Dodger and secretly brings him home with her. It turns out that Dodger has been trained as an expert pickpocket that and his evil master, the gypsy Azro (Harvey Keitel), wants him back. It's all Eva can do to keep herself and her mischievous new companion out of trouble.

A quirky, bright, PG-rated adventure that's as entertaining as Free Willy. Better, maybe, since monkeys are a lot more charismatic than whales. This is a splendid family film.

Enjoyed nearly everything. The crowds and performers at the beach scene excellent. There wasn't much reason to have the two crooks with the expensive limo in the plot; they were wasted. First movie I've seen that showed a puddle of "fresh" capuchin urine, or any other kind. Eva shouldn't have had to say she'd prefer her young brother be killed. The capuchin indeed was smart and a ready performer. But I was very impressed by the little actor who played Eva's brother, Jack: he was a tiny little professional, quick on the uptake with the word "monkey", and very smart about what Dodger was about, and where he could be found.
