Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: B Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Monsieur Hire is so delicate that you almost hold your breath during the last half-hour. Events of grave subtlety are taking place. Rated: 4/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Entertainment Weekly Rated: B May 24, 1989 Full Review Diana Tuova Film Obsessive Like Leconte’s other work, Monsieur Hire primarily aims to challenge the viewer, offering a deeply psychological and sensual cinematic experience. Aug 14, 2024 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) Monsieur Hire is an impressive technical achievement. Leconte has visualized his story deftly, from the burgundy shadows of Denis Lenoir's photography, to the sad wit of Michael Nyman's music and the elliptical dash of Joelle Haches' editing. Rated: 2.5/4 May 9, 2023 Full Review Kathy Fennessy The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Prior to the 1989 release of Monsieur Hire, Patrice Leconte's enthralling adaptation of Georges Simenon's 1933 mystery novella, he was a well-respected director in France... Afterward, he was an internationally acclaimed art house sensation. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 25, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Gilles Outstanding suspense both criminal and erotic Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/11/22 Full Review Kevin L The film was terrific up to the moment of Hire suddenly, inexplicably running from the police even though he has already sent them evidence that could aid in any defence; just as he could deny the validity of the evidence against him that suddenly appears. The detective already strongly suspected the boyfriend. Hire suddenly running like that (esp. going out on the roof) seemed very much out of character for him, and taints the movie for me. Sure, I can buy her using him, and 'chicks dig jerks, as Bill Hicks liked to say, but it didn't work for me. Otherwise, it's a remarkable movie with stellar acting from the two leads. Blanc and Bonnaire are really impressive here, but Blanc most of all. While she brings an authentic sense of a young woman with a romantic sense who is drawn to a mysterious man with a life that intrigues her, Blanc creates a more fully dimensional character in Hire. This is a figure living in solitude, a voyeur living vicariously off of the view of this young woman's apt.; a man the general public finds off-putting, someone to ridicule. Good work overall by director Leconte and fellow co-writer s DeWolf and Simenon. But the ending left a bad taste for me as a last impression. The score worked well in keeping the tone of bittersweet sadness. 3.8 stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Audience Member A weird man is not up to much. He works as a tailor and when he is home he only watches his cute, young neightbour girl thorugh the windows. That's pretty creepy. When it turns out that she does not mind that, and even starts hanging out with him, we are in for a weird relationship and when you throw a murderinvestication in the mix we also gets some excitiment. Pretty cool plot, based on an elder film. It has great performances and it looks quite good. It's nothing too special, but this short film is well worth a watch. 6.5 out of 10 bowling tricks. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Like a lot of great movies, the ending probably doesn't appeal to everyone. I really like it, because no matter what reason you think is behind the "betrayal", all carry because of what kind of person Monsieur Hire has revealed himself to be. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member An unseen and unusual strange story of lonliness, desire and love. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A disappointing movie. I was sucked in by prof reviewers. There is some good stuff here. The two lead actors are uniformly excellent. The story was engaging for the first 30 mins. or so. But, the final resolution of the story; and the tying up of loose ends did not make any sense. This is a REAR WINDOW type of story. But, this guy only looks into one window. Of course, we understand that because a beautiful, often scantily clad, woman lives there. Interestingly for a French film, we never see her nude nor during any of her frequent love-making sessions. But, what is going on with all the other people on that side of the building? This lonely, window-peeper guy professes profound love for a woman he has hardly spoken to. It seems more like infatuation, tinged with lust. I suppose a pre-teen or teenager could make this mistake. But, our protagonist is a mature male, in his late 30s or 40s. And, its not like this guy is not getting any sex. We see him visiting a brothel where he apparently is a regular customer. We would have to think this persons psyche is extremely fragile, or even pathological. Ultimately, the story is inconsistent. The ending/denouement is not believable. I was not willing to go along for that ride. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
