Fernando F. Croce CinePassion The studio gave Edgar G. Ulmer an evocative title and a six-day schedule, which is more than enough for this bit of overpowering ingenuity Feb 13, 2010 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid Not one of Edgar G. Ulmer's most essential films, and it's more than a little clunky, but it features some inspired miniature work and an energetic lead performance by John Carradine. kevin w Filmed during WW2, this action adventure has the feel of riding on a shoestring budget. For instance, Sondergaard and Carradine usually play secondary characters or heavies, but here are the romantic leads. Even they sound surprised to learn that, but both give it their all. Carradine very nearly seems good enough to be leading man material. Sidney Toler is good as the villain. This one is an odd little puppy, better than one might think it would be. There's a wonderful nihilist or humanist screen play waiting to be written, depending on your bearings. The nihilist ends the film with Katrina; the humanist shows them working together to survive. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1194016,00.html Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member LOW BUDGET B FILM, WITH A LESS THAN STELLAR CAST.
