Love S I love this movie. Especially since it was made in 1967 and looks this good. It's a good through-back film of sorts. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/22 Full Review Audience Member I quite liked this non-Godzilla kaiju picture. A group of reporters find a baby monster they call Gappa, which they take back to Japan. Unfortunately these reporters never learned that you don't play with bear cubs because momma bear will come an maul you, because the momma and papa Gappa come to Japan and wreak havoc to find their offspring. Although the characters are all standard issue and not all that interesting or well developed, the humor is actually funny at times and there is a TON of kaiju monster movie destruction throughout the film, which is my main complaint about most kaiju pictures, that they make you wait until the end for a good monster fight. Released by Nikkatsu, this was their only kaiju picture (with terrific special effects by a former Toho SFX artist) and they unfortunately went out of business shortly thereafter. I'd have loved to see what else they would have come up with if they'd stayed in business. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Rather boring and of nonsensical, children will make any monster flick worse. This also doesn't add anything to the genre, it cuts and pastes ideas from other monster flicks. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member 'Gappa' or 'Monster from a Prehistoric Planet' or whatever seems to get a bad reputation from Kaiju fans, but I honestly can't see why. The effects aren't great, I'll admit, but their also not the worst. Films like 'Yongary' from South Korea, 'The Giant Claw' from the US and Denmark's 'Reptilicus' all look infinitely worse than this. The characters are fairly two-dimensional, but again no more so that other Kaiju films, and the dialogues not great, but I get the feeling that's more to do with the English dub than the film itself. It's not a great film but it's equally not that bad. If you're a Kaiju fan than I'd say give it a go Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member An expedition to a remote island discovers a prehistoric flying dinosaur and brings it to Japan; it's parents come and stomp buildings until they get the brat back. Giant monster movie that brings nothing new to the genre (it's a virtual remake of GORGO). Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member It was hard to stay fully awake through this film so I paused it many times but I managed to watch it all. Overall the plot was great and effects were good for its time but it did drag for a bit so ill rate it a 5/10 still a must watch kaiju film though Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
