Critics Consensus

It doesn't quite live up to its intriguing premise, but Monsters is a surprising blend of alien-invasion tropes, political themes, and relationship drama.

Deborah Ross The Spectator A special, wonderfully atmospheric achievement. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Nick Roddick Sight & Sound An astonishing achievement for first-time British feature director Gareth Edwards. Apr 4, 2011 Full Review Peter Howell Toronto Star A better-than-average debut by a filmmaker who merits watching. Let's hope that he keeps some of his indie spirit when Hollywood comes calling. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 4, 2011 Full Review Wael Khairy The Cinephile Fix “Monsters” has one of the most unexpected endings...Pay close attention to the opening and closing shots, there’s a link between them. When you discover what it is, you’ll be thinking of this unsettling ending for days. Thom T I watched this movie based on two things. 1) it was on a list of best 50 horror movies. 2) One critic stated it was the "Best giant monster movie ever." Well let me tell you, it was neither. Very slow to start and it maintained that level of boredom throughout the film. I kept hoping they'd get to some fantastical giant monster scene that would leave me on the edge of my seat. Epic fail. Do not waste your time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Audience Member Worst monster movie ever made. Monsters barely in it, the plot terribly written and the acting was so corny. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Oaklee D An interesting film, not what I expected. The titular monsters are used sparingly. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Tongue L I really liked this movie. In fact, I even purchased the movie. I’m surprised it did not get better reviews. Anywho, if you like an easy to follow, good sci-fi movie, I recommend watching this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Ted A Terrible movie. Where were the “monsters”. Ending was horrifically stupid. Don’t waste your time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/24/24 Full Review Julie H Loved this movie. Will watch it over and over again. Always leave with the thought of who the real monsters are. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
