Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) Freely adapting the work of Finnish writer and artist Tove Jansson, Moomins On The Riviera is a leisurely animated feature, a respectful tribute to her creations. Rated: 3/5 Apr 6, 2016 Full Review Charles Solomon Los Angeles Times Very young children may be amused by these minimal characters, but the slow pace and thin content will have older children and adults fidgeting in their seats. Dec 3, 2015 Full Review Sophie Monks Kaufman Little White Lies Long live the Moomins. Audience Member Appalling, couldnï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)t watch. Honestly, an insult to the moomins. The characters were charicatures of the moomins in the original book. Doesnï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)t have the spirit of moomin at all, I could t make it to the end. No, no, no! If you are after a movie, try Comet in moominland instead, it exactly feels like the stories! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member They did not respect a damn about how the characters act! I grew up with Tove's books and with the series and this movie it's a spit to the face to people who love these characters!!! I hated the fact that they put Moomin mamma as a stupid woman! COME ON! Moomin always ALWAYS talks with his parents if he has some trouble and he would never enter a duel with ANYONE out of jealousy!!! The jealous one is anorkmaiden!!! I hated it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The animation looks like Jannson's strips; but the UK voice casting is abominable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member delightfully whimsical Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member "This rooms too big so we're going to live on the table." 'The Moomins' are a bit of a childhood oddity for me, at the time my visual sensibilities clearly hadn't kicked in as my view of the show was very negative. The name, the simple nature to the character bothered me. But then again the only thing I was interested in at the time was 'The Simpsons' everything else could go to hell. But looking back at the show and playing it in my head I didn't give it it's just rewards at the time. That was part of the reason in watching 'The Moomins at the Riviera' the other being 2D animation is a rare treat on cinema screens. With 'Ghibli' being put on hold, 'Disney' to my sadness deciding to put 'Frozen' in 3D and Sylvain Chomet's next animated foray being in 2017 2D offerings are rare to say the least. So it's a refreshing sight even more so with it's light story and breezy pacing. It's a simple film as it should be with it's real intended audience being sub 8 years old. But that's not to say its not for anyone as the visuals on offer and at times good humour will certainly keep adults attention for the entire film. it has that perfect balance of what will make both kids and adults laugh - sometimes one or the other but often at the same time. There are animated features that have simple stories but not simple motives 'Moomins' here is pretty much what the title they go to the Riviera. After a brief encounter pirates sees them come across some of their items - one of which is a leaflet/book about the Riviera. There and then they decide to go. They're impulsive and blissfully unaware of their up-scale surroundings. They want to go so they decide to go just like that and where other films would punish its characters spontaneity this films doesn't. There's no draw back their ignorance of the situation and their ability to go with the flow pushes them forward and into a high class hotel - where they're mistaken for a royal family. Visually it's wonderful with warm oranges abound the only indication of the Riviera being hot. it's unmistakably stylised and instantly recognizable to those who grew up with the show. There's the odd animation hitch but that just adds to the charm and solidifies its hand draw nature.it may not be the most visually complex like 'The Illusionist' but it memorable and it stand out in the sea of 3D features. There are some issues most notably the English voice actors at times seem disinterested in their characters and at times 'Snorkmaiden' comes off as irritating begging the question why 'Moomin' are together. There are some strange story choices given the age with the phrase "I'm going to kill him" being used - which seemed at odds with the easy going and fun vibe the film has. It's quirky humour and unique character designs along with the delightfully simple visuals, warm oranges bathing over everything stand out in the animation world. It's a simple story with simple story beats nothing goes wrong and the arguments are kept to a minimum and that's just how it should be. 'Moomins On The Riviera' is a sweet film that sails wonderfully on it's charm, the characters are great and at the end the Moomins are back at home having had a great adventure. Positive without any sickly sweet motive or message a nice friendly film for the whole family. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Peppa Pig for existentialists. Brilliant.
