Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times It's to our great benefit he finally saw the light, and Morita created one of the most memorable characters of the last 40 years. He was indeed more than Miyagi, but that alone would have earned him a special place in Hollywood history. Rated: 3/4 Feb 6, 2021 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Intimate, honest biography addresses racism, alcoholism. Rated: 4/5 Feb 19, 2021 Full Review Kimberly Ricci Uproxx More Than Miyagi emerges as an uplifting story despite soaking itself in sadness at times. Feb 18, 2021 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound The end of his life is hard to watch. You basically see a man drinking himself to death. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Andrew Gaudion THN It is a film that both shows a lot of love for a beloved and troubled actor, but also one that makes sure to frame his career in the larger context of representation on screen for Asian American characters. Rated: 4/5 Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Chris Gelderd Flickering Myth Enlightening, entertaining and emotional in all the right places, this is the documentary Pat Morita deserves and one that everyone should watch in his honour because there truly IS more to him than Miyagi. les n Interesting viewpoint of his fellow actors ruined by the nattering, insincere widow and friends. She should have been given 1 or 2 comments and that is it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A very touching tribute...he was a very good "friend, of a friend" and was loved and supportive of our Japanese-American community in San Francisco...!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member AMAZING AMAZING DOC!!!!!!!!!! Bravo to the director & producer. Enjoyed the film from beginning to end. You all should be so so proud. Hope to see more from all you in the future! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I LOVED IT!! Not normally much of a documentary person but it truly was really good. Very professionally done. I'm impressed!! Had no idea that he played in so many movies/shows. It makes me sad that he had to deal with so much adversity in his life. This documentary proves that you never know what a person is going through and that everyone deserves to be shown grace. Congratulations!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story (2021) is the new film by Kevin Derek, director of 2016's The Real Miyagi. It is everything the title says, and more. The documentary is the real life story of the beloved actor and comedian that brought the iconic and endearing, Mr. Miyagi, to life in The Karate Kid film series. The story of Pat Morita is told through personal archived footage and interviews with people that knew him best, from his 3rd wife, Evelyn Guerrero, his Happy Days co-stars, and the cast of the original Karate Kid, including Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, and Martin Kove. While the film is a look at the life of this universally beloved character actor, it is more. It is also a look at the evolution of the Asian-American experience in Hollywood films and television, a look at the post World War II experience of Japanese Americans, and a look at the personally destructive pain of the legacy of alcohol addiction. All of this reflected through the scope of experience of this complex and likeable, groundbreaking star of stage, television, and movies. Henry Winkler Henry Winkler Nearly four decades after he created the most iconic role of his career, and one of the most iconic roles in movies history, and more than a decade after his passing, the world is again immersed in the world of The Karate Kid thanks to the Cobra Kai resurgence on Netflix. As we discussed in our prior review of Cobra Kai, despite Pat Morita's absence from the series the presence of him, and Mr. Miyagi, loom large over and through the fabric of the series; this is, partially, why it is so successful. In many ways the series is, itself, a tribute to Mortia's legacy, as much as Miyagi's. More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story (2021) helps viewers to fill the gap of time between seasons of Cobra Kai, for those who can't get enough of The Karate Kid saga. More importantly, it helps to explain how, despite having no prior martial arts training, Pat Morita used his life's experiences and pain to create the believable and beloved martial arts master that earned him an Academy Award nomination as Best Actor. This is an enjoyable and moving film and I highly recommend it. The film will be released of February 5TH on Apple, Amazon, GooglePlay and VUDU People can Pre-Order on iTunes now at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/more-than-miyagi-the-pat-morita-story/id1546248956 -by Marc Zirogiannis, Editor in Chief Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
