Critics Consensus

There's no denying that mother! is the thought-provoking product of a singularly ambitious artistic vision, though it may be too unwieldy for mainstream tastes.

Dahlia Balcazar Bitch Media Mother! is what happens when a dude has an idea he thinks is brilliant and no one checks him on it. Mar 1, 2021 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine [Darren] Aronofsky wants mother! to have the intensity and inner logic of a sweaty nightmare. But it's a fake cinematic fever dream-the kind made by a director so self-conscious that he's always checking his own temperature. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh Metro Newspaper (UK) Ultimately, you may be left pondering not so much the allegory as to why [Darren] Aronofsky would want to push not just his audience but his girlfriend through such an extreme wringer. Rated: 5/5 Oct 11, 2017 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film Aronofsky "recycles" others' and, ironically, his own previous film ideas, resulting in Mother! appearing an unoriginal horror concoction, an uncomfortable reminder of other, much better films. Rated: 3/5 Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Clayton Schuster Vague Visages If mother! lacks the refinement of a manifesto for a new breed of movie theater flick, it makes up for it in the audacity to be unique. Dec 6, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Once movies leave their creators’ hands they often become their own thing. “mother!” benefits from that truth. While Aronofsky has a pointed personal meaning behind it, what you bring to the film will help define it for you. Rated: 4/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Ian Y Not a horror film. And not a good film.. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Gregg B This is a wild ride of a movie. Beginning to end. Jennifer Lawrence is absolutely incredible. Amazing cast. Insane direction and cinematography. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Audience Member This is legitimately the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. Had to turn it off with about 30 minutes left. It was literal torture...if the government ever needs to coerce some information out of somebody, just force them to watch this movie until they spill. Although that would almost certainly violate the Geneva convention. It's that bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Emily Z this is one of those movies, to me at least, that leave your heart hurting and your mouth wide open. many apparently find this movie gross or annoying, and I wonder if they will ever realize that is the point. this movie was made to make you feel. it is SUPPOSED to be gut wrenching. you are MEANT to be annoyed at the guests. you are SUPPOSED to feel anxious and grossed out, that is the entire concept of this movie, and the fact that people cannot wrap their minds around that disturbs me. anyway, I absolutely adored every aspect of this, from the acting to the storytelling to the way every character was perceived. I would 100% recommend this to anyone who wants to feel, because I believe that is one of the main factors of this movie. not only does it use the abstract symbolism behind characters, but every scene makes you feel something very strong. hatred, empathy, and an unbelievably amount of anger and disbelief, and I have a very strong feeling that it was intentional and part of the storytelling. I could go on and on about how strongly I could feel during this movie, but this is a long enough review as it is. anyway, great film, would watch again :)) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Alyona K This movie gave me goosebumps when i understood the core theme behind it… The suffer of our Mother Earth because of us (people) and questions to God, why he let all these horrible things happen to it. The movie has rich symbolism and if you like thinking about life being and everything, you’ll find Mother! worth watching Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Lisa S The writer and director owe me 2 hours of life back. This was the most ridiculous, bizarre, and disgusting movie I've ever watched. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
