A young woman spends her days renovating the Victorian mansion that she lives in with her husband in the countryside. When a stranger knocks on the door one night, he becomes an unexpected guest in their home. Later, his wife and two children also arrive to make themselves welcome. Terror soon strikes when the beleaguered wife tries to figure out why her husband is so seemingly friendly and accommodating to everyone but her.

An abstract way to give a parable. The crystal core found in the fire symbolising renewal seemed a weak link. Ego and talent, consuming all around it with filthy, violent ‘followers’ compounding the egoist. To me, giving birth and being destroyed by adoring, sick fans seems a metaphor for the price of fame, that’s paid over and over again. The acting was hammy but l did believe in the sucker of a character that JL played. Not a bowl of cherries, though interesting, it is a self conscious piece of work that slams you over the head.

An intriguing mish-mash but watchable if you have the stomach for it. Jennifer Lawrence is brilliant as usual even if she didn't have a clue what it was all about. Who did? It's not boring and tends to keep you watching even as it slips into total chaos and insanity. As far as symbolism goes I think the jury is out. Interpret it as you will but in the end it's quite entertaining if you like the obscure and weird.

All great works of art are polarizing. And also some of the best reflect life itself. Those that blame DA's film for being over the top should take a look at the world around them. In the sense of a horror film it completely succeeds, it's traumatizing to watch. But it's also so consistent as parable, as dark comedy and metaphor, so plainly obvious, that its ability to be enjoyed (or reviled) is not pretentious - at least to this viewer. It's a profound movie, and I think a fantastic one.
