Critics Consensus

Somber and boldly intimate, Mother of Flies is a folk horror chamber piece that infuses its meditation on death with jaw-dropping practical effects and ferocious weirdness.

But there are so many compensations that it’s very much worth seeing for anyone who loves horror—especially the atmospheric and gory, dread-based type, rather than the kind that is single-mindedly obsessed with staging jump-scares. Go to Full Review

*Mother of Flies* (2025), by the filmmaking family of Zelda Adams, Toby Poser, and John Adams (who also star in the film), is not an easy movie to watch. And not just because of its explicit exploration of gore and violence. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

This is pure cinema, unpretentious, rough-hewn, mystical, conjured from the earth, offered up at the forest altar of whatever flesh-and-blood gods are still listening. Go to Full Review

See more Alex B @AlexBioni 6 days ago I Eat the Air as I Speak This comes from the same people who made Hellbender, so it has a similar tone and style. I think the blood and CGI are actually really good. There are some disturbing images, from the opening woman covered in blood to the pregnant woman on the table. The effects are impressive for a movie that sometimes looks like it was made on a home camera. Toby Poser gives the best performance. She feels welcoming but sinister at the same time. The three main actors all have good moments, especially considering they also wrote and directed the movie. There are funny dialogue moments too, like the dinner scene that actually made me laugh. I was impressed by how much they pulled off with almost no budget. I also liked the original story. The acting is noticeably bad in some spots, while other times it's really good. Some of the line delivery feels amateurish. The second act drags a bit, but the third act picks things back up. It won't be for everyone, but I enjoyed it. See more Jennifer W @RT96958735 Aug 7, 2026 I really wanted to like this film, especially as an avid folk horror fan who has gone through cancer, but unfortunately I found it quite disappointing...the plot, the acting etc just didn't land for me at all. Neither the story nor the relationships between the characters were compelling to me. Visually it was nice though - lots of lovely nature shots etc, but that was about it. See more Jordan P @Jordanflickmaster Jun 13, 2026 This looks, feels, acts as a high school project. Very amateur. See more Taylor H @RT12139096 May 26, 2026 Must watch for horror fans. Excellent cinematography had an unsettling tone from the start. Really really liked the camerawork. I didn’t find it to be extremely scary but it pressed all the right buttons for me to remain engaged in this dark story See more Read all reviews
