      Movie Info

From the director of Arlington Road comes a spine-tingling, super-natural thriller based on actual events that will rattle your nerves and shake your beliefs. Distraught by the sudden, tragic death of his wife (Debra Messing), John Klein (Richard Gere), a journalist for The Washington Post, finds himself mysteriously drawn to a small West Virginia town when his car inexplicably strands him. Rescued by the sympathetic but skeptical local police sergeant (Laura Linney), he soon learns that many of the town's residents have been beset by bizarre events, including sightings of an eerie "moth-like" entity, similar to the one seen by his late wife. Investigating further and having his own terrifying encounters with the creature, he becomes obsessed with the idea that this supernatural being can predict impending calamities and is trying to warn the town of one. Is this a psychic delusion brought on by his grief or can he convince the police sergeant that there's a tragedy that must be averted? His life, and potentially others' lives, depend on his making the right choice before time runs out.

Richard Gere tends a hit or miss actor due to his limited range, but I actually really liked him in this underrated psychological horror-thriller. Gere brings a compelling vulnerability to John Klein, a recently widowed reporter investigating the strange sightings of the Mothman in a lonely West Virginian town. It's pretty slow-burn at the beginning, but once Klein arrives in Point Pleasant, the film never lets up with delivering smart scares and a super chilling atmosphere. The sequence where Klein is in his hotel room talking to Indrid Cold on the phone is literally one of the freakiest horror movie scenes ever!! I also really liked how the script manages to take it's real-life source material and seamlessly weave an examination of Klein's journey through grief and eventually acceptance. This film could have so easily been a X-Files knock-off but thankfully avoids those trappings, for the most part. I probably would rate this movie higher if 10 or 20 minutes have been trimmed. I also thought the ending was technically great but seemed to abandon the great atmosphere the filmmakers did such a good job of setting up before. Overall, this is a very high quality modern horror film.

Really kinda boring throughout. I think the reason why they decided to cast two frustratingly boring actors together to headline a moody supernatural and often too clinical thriller was because Chicago had just come out in the same year and I guess they assumed that Richard Gere was headlining his own return to fame? Truthfully, what I disliked the most about the film was the banality of the whole thing, it just drags and I didn't feel connected to any of the characters. The overly long film starts to really get on your nerves towards the end, as you feel that you've wasted quite a bit of time viewing it and wish that you hadn't. Overall, the performances aren't bad but they feel unnecessary, the whole film just feels slightly unnecessary. Best part of the film was probably the story, it actually wasn't bad and had its fair share of original elements.

How do you kill a good legendary story? Put Richard Gere in it and give him no script to work with.

A confusing film that drew its premise from the urban legend. Creepy but failed to scare. Gere's performance was great but the story was a let down.
