Audience Member I remember seeing this film at the time of its limited UK art house cinema release (1995) and it was incredibly funny, making me laugh out loud which is a rarity, believe me. Ignore the awful poster, it's cleverly-written sophisticated sexual shenanigans played with wit, wrapped around a superb central performance by Javier Bardem. It was the first time I had heard of the actor, a complete unknown at that time outside of his native Spain, but I was incredibly impressed by Bardem and felt sure he was destined for bigger things. At the time, I was a freelance journalist, and I recall having lunch with Dylan Jones shortly after seeing Boca a Boca. When asked by the editor if I had any interesting ideas, one of them was a proposal to write a piece on Bardem as the next Antonio Banderas waiting in the wings. Alas, Mr Jones, then-editor of the now-defunct upmarket mens mag, Arena, had never heard of the Spanish actor and immediately dismissed the suggestion. It didn't surprise me when Bardem went on to become an international star because his talent, along with a uniquely Spanish testosterone-charged charm without being chauvinist, was so evident from his performance in this early film in his career, and it was obvious he would get noticed in Hollywood. A pity I missed the opportunity to alert these shores about this fine Spanish thespian who showed a fine flair for comedy as well as for his since better-known dramatic roles but, hey, at least I had the satisfaction of knowing that I know a good actor in a good film when I see one. Amargo, yo? (that means 'bitter, me? in Spanish!). Seriously though, folks, I jest: actually, I was quite used by then to having my suggestions dismissed, usually (I assumed) because I had a tendency to spot things too early. It was the same story with The Weakest Link and, can you believe it, Absolutely Fabulous! The reason I knew about it before anyone else, was because one of my ex's worked as an extra on the pilot for Ab Fab, and told me that it was the funniest thing he'd ever worked on and destined to be a massive hit. So, if you readers trust my judgement a little more than did Mr Jones, I thoroughly recommend this Spanish film, with the sub-titles, if you like very funny, sharp, naughty, grown-up comedy, which still stands the test of time, over 20 years later, even when, hopefully, the world has matured a little when it comes to matters of sex and sexual identity. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Zany Spanish farce with lots of plot twists and turns. Javier Bardem has great comedic timing and charm. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Had more substance to the storyline, as well as more twists and turns than I expected from such a movie. Surprisingly funny and entertaining. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Really funny and good movie! Aitana Sanchez-Gijon is perfect and very beautiful woman! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member SIA pitched this as worthy of an Oscar nom. Not quite.
