      Critics Consensus

Mr. Bean's Holiday means well, but good intentions can't withstand the 90 minutes of monotonous slapstick and tired, obvious gags. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

When London's wet weather becomes too much to bear, pratfall-prone Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) heads to the French Riviera for some fun in the sun. As usual, his plans do not go smoothly, and he is mistaken for both a kidnapper and an award-winning filmmaker when he arrives with a Romanian director's son and an aspiring actress in tow.

I can't really find a reason to justify the existence of this film other than, clearly, a quick paycheck for those involved. But, really, this film is more "faithful" to the character of the series than that lame movie they did, specifically, for American audiences. There story that is here is largely unimportant, clearly, it's just about the next sight gags. To be honest a lot of these gags feel like stuff they left off the series because they just didn't get around to it, that's not to say they aren't funny because the film, surprisingly, gets better as it goes on. I say surprisingly because a lot of the gags, at first, don't really work at all but they start clicking better as the movie goes along. They aren't particularly memorable but I did like Bean being stuck in an outhouse, and somehow ripping it off, and moving it with him still stuck. Really it is silly humor and some of the gags are ripped off the TV series. There's actually some really inspired bits here though. I found the stuff with Willem Dafoe to, actually, be really funny. I just found his character's vanity, as evidenced in his film, Playback Time, that's screened at Cannes and how pretty much the film is just meant to showcase him and his "talents". It's clearly all about him and the film reflects that. I just thought that it added something different to the film and I'd actually like to see how much they actually filmed for that which really didn't comprise more than 15% of the movie, because it was really quite inspired. Rowan Atkinson is great as always, he doesn't need to say anything for him to be funny and the film shows that off. He certainly can be over-the-top but the guy has great comedic timing, there's no doubt about it. But this Bean movie has me wondering why they won't, at least do, a Blackadder movie. If you've never seen Blackadder, Netflix instant has it and I suggest you watch it since it's one of the best comedy series I've ever seen. The series tells the story of Edmund Blackadder at different points of British history and how every generation of this character achieves to strive greatness in the face of great stupidity. If you've ever seen this series then you know just how talented and quick-witted Rowan Atkinson can be and if there can be TWO Bean movies then there's no reason we can't get ONE Blackadder movie. No matter how much I love the Bean series, I'll always love Blackadder more. A man can dream though, a man can dream. Anyway, this film is light and silly. So don't go in expecting a film exploring the complexities of human nature. I, for one, had a lot of fun watching this and I'm not afraid to admit it. Will I watch it again? Highly unlikely but this a good movie if you want to watch something that won't take much of your time or your brainpower.

Decent sequel to Bean, this is a modest comedic affair with mild laughs, but the material is more strained this time around to try and create a comedy that is both memorable and fun. Mr. Bean's Holiday is a decent comedy with a few good laughs, however with nearly every sequel it fails to deliver something that is very memorable and above all worth it. The material here is decent at best, sometimes it falls flat, and Rowan Atkinson tries too hard. The film made me laugh, but I felt something was missing to make it a good sequel. As far as I'm concerned, this is a decent film that is fun, but lacks anything to really make it stand out. Mr. Bean, the character is as usual dimwitted and lots of fun and Atkinson really delivers what you'd expect from the character. But there's just something lacking in this film to make it a good enough sequel to watch. This is a fun film, but lacks anything that made the series really good. The comedic elements at times don't work. The best way I could describe the film is by saying that it's a decent comedy that is mildly entertaining. I liked the film, but they could have done a better job. The film had so much potential in being a great comedy and due to its idea of Mr. Bean on holiday, the filmmakers had so much potential in delivering a good comedy, in the end it was a decent flick, nothing special with a few laughs.

Silly. It definetly had its moments. Beautiful scenery, especially the French countryside. I went with my 12 year-old brother and he loved it!

Mr. Bean's Holiday is better than the first film, but only because it focused more on the character and less on trying to have a plot. The film is ridiculous just as it should be, but there is a creepiness about Bean in some moments that I couldn't get past. Rowan Atkinson is still funny though and still keeps the character the same, its just that at some parts I wondered how weird they were trying to make him. I also still feel that they cannot make a 90 minute movie about Mr. Bean and keep it interesting all the way through, because honestly I was bored at many times. Its pretty much the same as the first film, other than doing the smart thing and getting rid of a story and just doing a series of Bean's trouble makings.
