Lucy Peters Little White Lies Lawtey delivers a dynamic performance considering the big boots of his subject, although the film suffers the expected issue of casting any actor to represent the singular and iconic star. Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) It’s a bold movie that tries to find a feelgood drama in the life of Richard Burton, but such is the pitch of this tender biopic. Rated: 4/5 Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Jonathan Romney Financial Times [Jones] can signify more with a gently furrowed brow than most performers can at full fury — which very nearly makes this mostly bland film into an implicit essay on contrasting acting styles. Rated: 2/5 Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Terry Staunton Radio Times Lawtey is the true star of the piece, a mesmerising presence both in early scenes as the rough-around-the-edges pupil and in latter stages of the narrative, when his volatile personality threatens to derail a thespian career before it's barely begun. Rated: 4/5 Apr 12, 2025 Full Review Tom Shone Sunday Times (UK) Presumably, the film didn’t want anything that interfered with its inspirational teacher narrative — To Sir, with Love with coal dust on top — but it forces Jones into a certain insipidness. Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Helen Hawkins The Arts Desk Although Mr Burton's style is conventional, it is so engagingly performed that its oversights seem less important than its achievements. Audience Member It started really well but got lost half way and in the end was 30 minutes too long. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review Kyle J Not perfect technically but acting gets better and better and better. Wasn't sure Toby Jones face would fit but he was superb and Lawtey in the final scenes brought Burton to life. It is a good independent biopic and professionally produced. I would say the music needed more thought, Welsh accents were almost non-existant, background historic smoke effects passable, and early personality of Burton could have been delivered deeper, but the film is refreshing and talent in every direction. Best film out of Wales ever! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review John W Beautifully photographed and lit production. It has excellent acting. The Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford is convincingly reproduced (the orignal building has been hacked-about since Richard Burton's time there). Excellent work from the Art Department. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Gisella F This is a wonderful film with fantastic performances. It captures a great sense of history of its time: loved the landscape, sets and costumes, the lovely sounds of the Welsh language. I expected Lesley Manville (such a great actress) and Toby Jones to be good, and they were! But it's the performance by Harry Lawtey as young Rich Jenkins becoming Richard Burton that really knocks it out of the park: he is riveting and moving and very impressive. I loved how he changes the way he holds himself and how he speaks from early in the film right through to the glimpses of a very impressive classical actor dominating the stage in a Shakespeare drama at the end of the film. The relationship between mentor P.H. Burton and young Richie is central to the film and very well done. Nuanced and captivating performances. I loved the film so much that I keep thinking about it. I want to go and see it again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review gerry p This is an intense film, not the usual feelgood biopic, and is all the better for it. There are tensions and ambiguities aplenty, all grounded in some pitch-perfect performances by the two leads and an authentic evocation of the harsh but formative milieu of industrial workers in South Wales. The sense of where he had come from never left Burton and the demons came too, manifesting themselves in the early drink problem and the almost self-destructive urge to do things his way. ‘Rebel’ or ‘hellraiser’ don’t really fit the complex personality which both drove and tormented him. Lawtey gets the presence, rich voice and the facial mannerisms absolutely right though he inevitably is more tall and handsome than Burton himself. Toby Jones, as ever, hints at so much with every pained contortion of his plain face. Stefan Rhodri (‘Dave Coaches’) is brilliant in bringing the colourful wastrel of a father to life. Perhaps he is the real ghost who stayed with Richard thereafter. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review The ghost of B One of the most iconic Welsh people of all time, let down by a director with a “for Wales see England” attitude in 2025. A real shame, was so excited for this film but yet another film where English people play the Welsh and portray them as simpletons. Funded by and directed by Welsh people too, embarrassing.
