      Critics Consensus

This update of Capra doesn't hold a candle to the original, and even on its own merits, Mr. Deeds is still indifferently acted and stale.

John S Mr Deeds is a feel good comedy from Sandler's early work. This is part of his second era I feel and is a great rewatch. Great laughs. The fight scene at the pizza shop is great and the side characters as always are a fun touch. Also seeing the delivery man out with Chinese food in NYC during the fire scene is a nice Easter egg. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review David P No it's not a classic. But if you don't take it too seriously it's actually a pretty funny movie. It's a comedy, it's supposed to be dumb! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Mike W I enjoyed the movie and thought most all of the actors did very well or better. Winona Ryder was Great. Sandler was only fair, as it seemed like he didn't put in much effort. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Sanad A A Gentleman's Comedy in a Crude World Well, well, well, let's talk about this movie, Mr. Deeds. I must say, it's an interesting one. It's got all the ingredients of a modern-day comedy - you know, the ones with sexual innuendos, questionable lines, and behavior that will make you raise an eyebrow. But hey, it's all in the name of laughs, right? I have to admit, though, the ending was a bit rushed. It's like they were in a hurry to tie up all loose ends and make sure the good guys triumphed over the bad guys. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the good guys winning, but the way they went about it was just plain silly. But here's the thing, this movie had a softer edge compared to other comedies of its time. You know, the ones that are so low class they make you cringe. So, kudos to Mr. Deeds for not being as offensive as the rest. It's like a breath of fresh air in a room filled with fart jokes. Now, let's talk about Adam Sandler. He's not his usual high-strung self in this movie. Nope, he's playing the low-key Gary Cooper role of Mr. Deeds from the 1940s. Sure, he gets a bit violent at times, but hey, who doesn't? We all have our moments. And Winona Ryder, well, let's just say she's not exactly the most believable love interest. I mean, she's pretty and all, but there's something missing in her acting. Maybe that's why she's not a big star anymore. It's not just her real-life problems, you know? But let me tell you, the real star of the film is John Turturro. He plays the Spanish butler, and boy, is he funny! Every scene he's in, he steals the show. You can't help but root for him. He's like the underdog we all love to see succeed. So, to sum it all up, Mr. Deeds is a pretty nice film. It's got its fair share of laugh-out-loud moments, but let's be real, it's no Gary Cooper-Barbara Stanwyck classic. It lacks the heart and soul of the original, focusing more on cheap laughs than a moral message. But hey, it's still worth a watch. Just don't expect it to be a life-changing experience. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Emilliano Jr S I only watched this for Winona Ryder & its soundtrack by Dave Matthew's band. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/21/23 Full Review Avant S remembered this movie to be lot more funny 15 or so years ago. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
