Deborah Young Hollywood Reporter A relentless stylishness unifies the film, extending from the hard bright lights of upscale Taipei all the way to the sleaziest junkyard of rural Japan, where the action unfolds. Feb 14, 2017 Full Review Jonathan Romney Screen International The film shifts so continually and so unpredictably between bleakness and whimsy, between the sugared and the sordid, that it's very hard for viewers to stay invested in the fiction, still less in the characters. Feb 13, 2017 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety The maverick director Sabu has made a hitman fable that's like Charlie Chaplin meets Takeshi Miike. The weird thing is, it works. Feb 13, 2017 Full Review Nathanael Hood Unseen Films ...deftly skips from gruesome violence to light-hearted comedy to soul-crushing tragedy. Rated: 7/10 Jul 10, 2019 Full Review Ersin Ali One Room With A View Mr. Long races out of the traps from the starting pistol, rushing to tell us the story of those that struggle beneath the urban threshold, and it does this - but it finishes while still chewing everything it tried to bite off. Rated: 3/5 Mar 7, 2019 Full Review Mark Schilling Japan Times [Chang Chen] does this more with attitudes and gestures than words - his Long is not a talker, to put it mildly. Nonetheless, he has a charisma that carries the film through its nothing-much-happening longueurs. Rated: 3/5 Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

S. C I almost shed tears. A very touching story told through visuals and with as little words as possible. Many beautiful shots that look like paintings. Loved the cinematography and scenery. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review Dick C This motion picture, Mr Long, 2017 is a fairly well done film written and directed by Hiroyuki Tanaka 田中博行 also as Sabu... And the casting is strong... In particular, Mr Long is portrayed great by one of my favourite, Chang Chen... I knew his father is in movie industries, say, Your Smiling Face (歡顏), 1979, which impresses me a lot... Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/18/22 Full Review Audience Member I really wanted to not like or just dismiss this movie while watching it. This could've been two better movies. Some of the writing is so preposterous, some has characters just being utterly silly, with cult-of-personality absurdity. It's a mix of a assassin/gangster genre with the evil gangsters coming to finish the job, redemption stories for the former prostitute junkie mom and former assassin, and Tampopo food worship. The 'comedy' wasn't really comedy, imo, as comedy is funny. It was more just silliness. And of course there's the scenes of Long's assassin character killing a numerous men by himself with only a knife and his apparent expert martial arts training (where do they make these guys?). The assassin-with-a-heart-of-gold trope is absurd, and the movie is exploitative as well. But I'll show some heart and give it 3 stars for trying so hard. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a good film. It was humorous and touching. Mr. Lone is a bad ass. you wouldn't want him to be coming for you. But he has a caring side too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
