Very different to many animated films these days, The story was great fun but it's too smart for the younger children to really enjoy, Plus there's not many laughs to be had which was abit of a let down, It's still very well done and gives us some educational bits too, I can't comment on the 3D as I watched the 2D version, Kids will love it's fast paced fun but won't understand what's going on half the time.

Time travel again, and this time with a view towards taking the kids along for the ride (though there's meat for the adult historical film aficionado as well). Many of the usual stops are included: ancient Egypt, the battle of Troy, the Renaissance, the French Revolution, but no battle of Waterloo. So it goes. Still mainly a fun outing down the corridors of history ... in the WayBack Machine with some old friends lovingly updated for a new generation.

2014 has been an odd year for animated movies. There have been a lot more misses than hits, but this is a surefire hit. Basically it's about a talking dog who has an adopted human son, and they time travel. It's very, looks great, and keeps my 3 year old very entertained. Just adult enough that you won't be bored out of your skull. Not the best animated movie of the year, but far from the worst. I have a high regard for this movie(that's a Peabody joke, I think, unless I misquoted it).

The fact that some of the trailers, that I've seen on my VOD channel, promote this movie as the funniest family movie of all time is just wrong. It's even more egregious when you consider the fact that THE LEGO MOVIE was released in the same year. I realize that you're not supposed to sell your own movie short, but come on. The Lego Movie is not only one of the funniest movies of the year, it's also among the best movies all year period, in fact it's tied with The Raid 2 for my favorite film of the year. Anyone who's seen TLM can tell you that Mr. Peabody and Sherman isn't even the funniest family movie of the year, much less of all time. With that out of the way, and I don't like to start off with a rant, I still found this film to be an absolute blast. I had much more fun watching this movie than I would've ever expected. Particularly considering that Mr. Peabody and Sherman are characters that are over 50 years old. I was worried that, with material source so dated, that the transition from small screen to the big screen would've been a tough one but, outside of some few rough spots here and there, the film makes the transition really well. Of course they updated the characters and give it a modern take. The rough spots I'm talking about are Mr. Peabody's constant use of puns. Like after they come back from the Trojan War, he'll say 'If at first you don't succeed, Troy, Troy again'. He'll do this several times in the film and Sherman will laugh, at first, before saying that he doesn't get the joke. They do this several times and it's only funny once. This is the only time where the film really truly feels outdated, because they make it such a big part of who Peabody is. Kind of a minor thing really, but it was a little annoying how they kept trying over and over. It's not like the puns themselves were terrible, though some of them were lame, it's just the abundance of them wore me out. The film is a little one-dimensional, though it tries to focus on Peabody's relationship with Sherman and what both mean to each other. The whole 'dogs aren't fit to raise kids' subplot is as obvious an allegory as there could ever be. What with homosexuals adopting and ultra-conservative politicians telling them that they aren't fit to raise children because they're two people of the same sex and how kids in school will react to that. I'm gonna avoid to go off on a tangent since this is a subject I'm very passionate about. But it's clear that's what that whole subplot is going after. It's not really explored deeply, since you also have the whole time travelling thing, which, obviously, takes up the biggest chunk of the film. It goes to all the places you would expect, but it's still a lot of fun to watch since the film is full of memorable historical figures. The funniest scenes would have to be with Leonardo Da Vinci. I find the film's energy incredibly infectious and it's part of why the film is so damn fun, it just never lets up. It moves at an incredibly brisk pace. The fact that it's a little over 81 minutes long also helps. The animation isn't out of this world. It gets the job done, it wasn't meant to set the world on fire in any way, but it's definitely more than solid. The voice acting is good. Ty Burrell, as always, does a great job here. I realize this has nothing to do with the film, but I think Ty Burrell would've made for a great Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun remake. Ed Helms got cast instead, but I find Ed to be a really funny and talented man, so he'll do a very good job as well. With that out of the way, the voice acting outside of Ty Burrell's performance is solid, nothing great or anything of the sort, but it works. With that out of the way, faults aside, this film is just fun from beginning to end. It's not great art, but it entertains and I definitely recommend it as a rental.
