Philippa Hawker Sydney Morning Herald Mr Six is a comic, elegiac film that never settles into one particular genre or mood. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 14, 2018 Full Review Nicolas Rapold New York Times The baggy 137-minute story drowns out Mr. Feng's assorted sharp moments with hoary family drama and clumsy plotting, and Li Yifeng is generic as Mr. Six's son. Dec 25, 2015 Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times The travails of an old gangster in a contemporary Beijing overrun with privileged brats is at the heart of the largely winning "Mr. Six." Rated: 3/4 Dec 24, 2015 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Hu Guan could easily shoot an action film that focuses on the battles between the old and new criminals; however, he decided to direct the film toward Mr. Six's character and focus on realism Oct 20, 2019 Full Review Nathanael Hood The Young Folks Hu and actor Feng Xiaogang transform Mr. Six into a creature capable of making and admitting to mistakes, feeling and expressing sincere emotion. Rated: 7/10 Jul 3, 2016 Full Review Boon Chan The Straits Times (Singapore) The film is a compelling character study meshed with a thriller that gives it a sense of urgency. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member this comes close to being the finest asian 'art film' i've seen in years... ...calling this a 'chinese crime comedy' doesn't begin to do it justice... i've never seen any other films by this chinese director (who plays 'mr six' here).... shows the audience the universal divide between generations ...youths acting spontaneously with no regard for foolish actions, unlike older, wiser senior citizens who have learned from their mistakes....mr six is an aging ex-crime boss who has grown into at least trying to follow a more enlightened path of treating others with respect (until they lose his respect), so there's a mixture of violence one moment and philosophy the next....though he now has heart problems and smokes like a chimney (as do most of the citizens of China, if this film rings true)...his son's in big trouble with some callow car-racing youths , his only stay-at home companion is a mina- bird he's trained to say his name (mr six)...because of his wayward son he's got a mountain of problems to deal with in spite of his failing health, so what's he going to do? ...take the hero's way out of course....after the frozen lake ending , stick around for the closing credits (the story continues) ...a universal story that should appeal to world audiences.... a novel twist on 'comedy today- tragedy tomorrow'...films don't usually come any better than this....(sorry about no caps- my keyboard seems to acting up today) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Mr. Six shows not only how different generations see the world before their eyes, but shows how modern day generations have less human ethic towards people. It makes a statement that doing the right in life should not just be for one man to do it by himself but for the whole world to collectively do the right thing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Late R Presenting itself as a gangster flick with the promise of a few showdowns, 'Mr. Six' turns out to be a lengthy character study of a lonely old man, set in his ways and living by principles that most have long abandoned, who just happens to be a well-known, former gangster. And although there are more than a few absorbing moments where it hits the right note, there are just as many that don't seem to hold much meaning. It's a somewhat unbalanced film where most of the characters aren't particularly interesting and experience little to no growth, not to mention that it's too long for the little it has to say (there's not actually a lot that it DOES have to say, to be honest). At the end of the day, it's Xiaogang Feng's central performance that keeps you watching and there's probably just about enough going on to sustain some level of interest, but it's certainly not going to blow you away. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/19 Full Review Audience Member Come on, this movie is preposterous. It's director Hu Guan's failed attempt at a Guy Ritchie old school gangster romp. The portrayal of Liu Ge as a morose, dull witted and out of touch old timer holds some water, but why would you want to watch that for 2 and a quarter hours? The Beijing setting and dialogue was ok. The gang of young upstarts was absolute rubbish. The posturing and unconvincing car talk reminded me of Danny and Kenickie in Grease. That was a parody. That was forty years ago. One of the worst things about this movie was the underlying message, that although Liu Ge might have had a chequered past, and although he might be a rough diamond, at heart he is OK because he does the right thing in the end by (Spoiler alert) telling the authorities about the corruption. This is not a masterpiece of modern Chinese cinema. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the better done generation gap films. The cinematography was great with subtle touches sprinkled throughout. Not all the scenes were perfectly written or acted, but it barely distracted from the fun and touching moments this film presents. I understood some of the Mandarin but relied heavily on the subtitle but it still translated well. It was a great break from the typical Hollywood films with artful cinematography that isn't oudated.
