Rated 3.5/5 Stars •  Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Saurabh K “Mrs.” (2025), directed by Arati Kadav, is a Hindi-language drama that serves as a remake of the acclaimed Malayalam film “The Great Indian Kitchen.” The narrative centers on Richa, portrayed by Sanya Malhotra, a trained dancer who, after marriage, confronts the entrenched patriarchal norms of her new household. Malhotra’s portrayal of Richa is both compelling and authentic, capturing the character’s evolution from a hopeful bride to a woman asserting her individuality. Her performance was recognized with the Best Actress award at the 2024 New York Indian Film Festival.  Director Arati Kadav deserves commendation for her sensitive and nuanced storytelling. She adeptly translates the essence of the original film while infusing it with a distinct voice that resonates with a broader audience. Her direction ensures that the film remains engaging, even for those familiar with the original. The film has garnered critical acclaim and multiple awards, including a nomination for Best Director for Arati Kadav at the 2024 New York Indian Film Festival , selections in Tallin , New York , Melbourne film festivals.  However, some critiques point to the film’s close adherence to the original, suggesting that it offers limited new perspectives. Additionally, certain cultural nuances specific to the South Indian setting of the original may not fully translate, potentially affecting the film’s relatability for a pan-Indian audience. In summary, “Mrs.” is a thought-provoking exploration of gender roles and societal expectations, elevated by strong performances and insightful direction. Arati makes a couple of interesting changes like the profession of the male protagonist. Nishant Dahiya plays a male gynecologist here adding an interesting dimension as he understands women body parts but has zero empathy for his wife's feelings.
