Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu (Eddie Murphy), she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way.

Mulan marks a sumptuous return to top form, and it can stand comparison with anything done in the classic era of Disney animation. Back then, Snow White dreamed that some day her prince would come. Today, the prince would not find Mulan waiting for him. Go to Full Review

The color palette is stunning, the attention to detail exquisite and the merger of computer-animated epic scenes with intricate, hand-drawn passages is seamless. Go to Full Review

Mulan is beautiful. It soars, laughs and cries. It's as delicate as a late-blooming cherry blossom and as solid as the Great Wall of China. Go to Full Review

This lovely, energetic and painterly film, based on an ages-old Chinese legend about a young warrior heroine, is one that achieves a nearly perfect blending of elements -- adventure, romance, comedy, music and art -- that define the genre. Go to Full Review

Trafalgar L @TDWaterLaw93 3d "Mulan" is arguably the best Disney animated film during its Renaissance era post-"Pocahontas." It tells the story of a young woman named Fa Mulan who is destined to become a perfect bride. However, after a disastrous meeting with her matchmaker Mulan feels she's letting her family down. At the same time China has gone to war and due to the villainous Shan Yu conscription has been enforced. Mulan balks at the decision because of her father's health, but when he insists that he'll die for honor she is distraught. Not wanting to see him go off to war she takes his place. Now masquerading as a male soldier Mulan is aided by her guardian Mushu and must stop the war. This film is full of memorable moments and breathtaking animation. Highly Recommended! The first Disney animated film to be based off a historical figure, the film's greatest strength is its fleshed-out characters thrust into the conflicts of war. Serene and captivating, Mulan relishes its quieter moments and balances these with smart, snappy dialogue and biting action set-pieces. See more Read all reviews
