The Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Other Muppets -- Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Sam the Eagle -- weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases -- past, present and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not be the finest version of Charles Dickens' tale to grace the screen, but The Muppet Christmas Carol is funny and heartwarming, and serves as a good introduction to the story for young viewers.

Victoria Luxford BBC.com Wonderful. The humour, the terrific soundtrack, it all just seems to come together in a way you wouldn't expect. Rated: 4/5 Dec 15, 2022 Full Review Caroline Westbrook Empire Magazine Vastly enjoyable despite the syrupy, soppy song bit in the middle (go make a glass of mulled wine during it). Michael Caine is perfect in the role and there are many genuine belly laughs. Rated: 4/5 Nov 19, 2019 Full Review Peter Rainer Los Angeles Times The Muppets are at their best when they're anarchic, without all this soggy whimsy. Nov 19, 2019 Full Review Calum Baker Radio Times The screenplay's wry humour and the mind-boggling ingenuity of the production team sell every moment. Rated: 5/5 Dec 21, 2024 Full Review Dulcie Pearce The Sun (UK) Every single scene is a delight and every song – including the stoical One More Sleep ’Til Christmas and joyful Thankful Heart – hits the perfect note. Rated: 5/5 Dec 9, 2022 Full Review Madeline Roth The Daily Beast The real MVP is Caine and his cockney charm; he plays it entirely straight, acting his arse off alongside a slew of fuzzy, singing Muppets as he reminds us to hold each other close “with a thankful heart.” Dec 5, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick R A fantastic retelling of the story, with the fun of the Muppets and Michael Caine's amazing performance. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Cody H “The love we find”, is all that is this film in one sentence. After the death of Jim Henson, a empty spot was left in the muppetworld. This being the first film after his passing, shows how much love and honor the film has for Henson. Michael Caine as Scrooge is fantastic, and the Christmas blend of the muppets and charles dickens’ A Christmas Carol, is hilariously addictively epic. Because the muppets are not playing themselves but act as characters within the story as being alive in roles. It is such convincing you forget that Michael Caine is actually speaking to masterful puppeteers. Inside jokes like “heating up the furnace” and “the american way.. i ment the english way” are brilliant. Songs, even musical isn’t my favorite, even brought to me a tear and smile. The catchy song of the Marley brothers in chains, and one more day till christmas, are well written and sang. All for the ultimate christmas movie is here, young and old will smile. And yes it is a musical and maybe Caine isn’t the best singer in the world, but that all doesn’t matter, because it is magical as a whole! If you don’t like the film, you must be really a Scrooge! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Natalie A Gob smacked this film doesn't have a 100% rating who couldn't love this adaptation of a Christmas Carol.....Love, love, love 🎄💖 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Edward O Michael Caine gave a truly memorable performance in this lighthearted but on point version of Scrooge! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Gustavo R One of the best of the many renditions of the Charles Dickens classic 🍿🍿🍿🍿/5 on Disney + Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Stacey C I love this so much, we always watch it on Christmas Eve with a glass of Baileys and a mince pie 🎄❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
