The Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Other Muppets -- Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Sam the Eagle -- weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases -- past, present and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not be the finest version of Charles Dickens' tale to grace the screen, but The Muppet Christmas Carol is funny and heartwarming, and serves as a good introduction to the story for young viewers.

Victoria Luxford BBC.com Wonderful. The humour, the terrific soundtrack, it all just seems to come together in a way you wouldn't expect. Rated: 4/5 Dec 15, 2022 Full Review Caroline Westbrook Empire Magazine Vastly enjoyable despite the syrupy, soppy song bit in the middle (go make a glass of mulled wine during it). Michael Caine is perfect in the role and there are many genuine belly laughs. Rated: 4/5 Nov 19, 2019 Full Review Peter Rainer Los Angeles Times The Muppets are at their best when they're anarchic, without all this soggy whimsy. Nov 19, 2019 Full Review Dulcie Pearce The Sun (UK) Every single scene is a delight and every song – including the stoical One More Sleep ’Til Christmas and joyful Thankful Heart – hits the perfect note. Rated: 5/5 Dec 9, 2022 Full Review Madeline Roth The Daily Beast The real MVP is Caine and his cockney charm; he plays it entirely straight, acting his arse off alongside a slew of fuzzy, singing Muppets as he reminds us to hold each other close “with a thankful heart.” Dec 5, 2022 Full Review Andy Lea Daily Express (UK) Until I saw this film, I hadn’t realised that Dickens was one Marley short. Here, Statler and Waldorf rattle their chains as the Marley brothers while delivering one of songsmith Paul Williams’s many earworms. Rated: 5/5 Dec 2, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Stacey C I love this so much, we always watch it on Christmas Eve with a glass of Baileys and a mince pie 🎄❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review McKay S I love this movie. I watch it every year on Christmas Eve, and it never fails to bring emotion and humor. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Heather R My absolute favourite Christmas movie ever made.. Michael Caine is brilliant as is the rest of the Muppets cast..just wonderful Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review Audience Member Great movie, high quality work, Caine was excellent. We watch it every year, and many times not even during the Christmas season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Dale R This is the fourth Muppet film, but the first released by Disney. Plus the first to be released after the death of Jim Henson. This is a retelling of Charles Dickens’s 1843 novella A Christmas Carol as only the Muppets could do. Michael Caine played Scrooge in this version and while he might not be the best Scrooge ever captured on screen, he does a good job here. I do question his musical ability and casting him in a musical. Kermit does feel different with Brian Henson as his performer, but I think Jim Henson’s son does capture the character well. Gonzo and Rizzo are the narrators for this version and their comedic antics throughout the film worked well for me. I also think that the Muppets on the whole do add to the story and provide a unique comedic take on the classic tale. The music for this film is fine. “One More Sleep ‘til Christmas” is a new classic Christmas song in my humble opinion. The Muppet movies that follow this one also tell a classic story through a Muppet lens. This one is the best of those. I think this is a must watch and I bring it out every Christmas to see it again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Craig W One of the Muppets best outings - Caine gives a performance beyond most who have played Scrooge, massive amount of credit to him for taking it so dramatically serious Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
