The Muppets perform the classic Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Other Muppets -- Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Sam the Eagle -- weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases -- past, present and future. They show him the error of his self-serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness.

Critics Consensus

It may not be the finest version of Charles Dickens' tale to grace the screen, but The Muppet Christmas Carol is funny and heartwarming, and serves as a good introduction to the story for young viewers.

Vastly enjoyable despite the syrupy, soppy song bit in the middle (go make a glass of mulled wine during it). Michael Caine is perfect in the role and there are many genuine belly laughs. Go to Full Review

Doug N. @dis_doug 19h A Muppet-fied musical retelling of the classic Christmas novel by Charles Dickens is a surprisingly heartwarming, and funny take on the well-known story. It maintains the charm, humor, and witty banters of the muppets. This is especially true between the Great Gonzo; who plays Charles Dickens, and Rizzo The Rat. They both act as the narrators of the film. It manages to not over do the muppet’s style of humor to distract from the dramatic and haunting core elements of the story. This musical features some great and memorable numbers with original songs by Paul Williams. These include the opening number introducing the main character titled “Scrooge”, Kermit the frog’s charming song called, “One More Sleep Til Christmas”, and the uplifting song “Thankful Heart” sung by the main character played by Michael Caine. He does a great job giving a nuanced performance as Ebenezer Scrooge. The Muppet Christmas Carol is a very well made retelling that keeps the right dose of the Muppet’s signature style humor, while not over shadowing the heart and dramatic moments of the classic tale by Charles Dickens. Michael Caine does a masterful job of being Scrooge and the humor in the movie adds to the emotional range. It's humorous yet heartfelt, has an excellent soundtrack, and is surprisingly faithful to the source material. Michael Caine is perfectly cast as Ebenezer Scrooge, and his decision to treat the Muppets as fellow actors was an absolutely brilliant move. The Muppets prove their greatness yet again in this expertly-crafted delightful film for the whole family. Michael Caine Is PERFECT As Scrooge, And The Muppets Never Cease To Make Us Smile. It's Not The Greatest Christmas Movie Ever Made, But It's Still A Classic. The songs are fun, the story true to the source material, and the Muppets elevate the humor we didn't know was hiding there all along. What really makes this work is Michael Caine's decision to play his character straight. Top notch and holds up perfectly.
