In 1964, New York City activist Mickey Schwerner (Tom Hulce) takes a field position in rural Mississippi on behalf of the civil rights group known as the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). There Schwerner; his wife, Rita (Jennifer Grey) ; and fellow activists Andrew Goodman (Josh Charles) and James Chaney (Blair Underwood) endure harassment by local thugs and police, as well as violent hate-mongers the Ku Klux Klan, in their quest to help African-Americans secure their basic human rights.
