Socially awkward Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) wants nothing more than to get married. Unfortunately, due to her oppressive politician father (Bill Hunter), Muriel has never even been on a date. Ostracized by her more socially adept friends, Muriel runs into fellow outcast Rhonda Epinstalk (Rachel Griffiths), and the two move from their small Australian town to the big city of Sydney, where Muriel changes her name and begins the arduous task of redesigning her life to match her fantasies.

The script from PJ Hogan is a lean and twisty wonder, offering Muriel several false dawns and even some dream nuptials before she finally comprehends the movie’s central message, that marriage is no substitute for personal empowerment.

Toni Colette burst onto the international stage with this heartwarming tale of an overweight girl, Muriel, with no self-esteem who wants nothing but to feel good about herself. Rachel Griffiths plays her friend Rhonda who helps her escape the misery of the small beach resort town of Porpoise Spit. Oh, and the music of ABBA plays a crucial role. Muriel's path is long and circuitous, and includes changing her name to 'Mariel'. At many times, she lies so much it's hard to take. But ultimately, she's sympathetic.

How is this a comedy? A cavalcade of unpleasant characters with the unhappy and unhinged Muriel stealing from her family to further her quest to be likable. Cringy? Sure. Funny? Nope.

The first time I saw this film advertised I was in my teens and it just didn't appeal to me. I decided to watch this many years later and what was I thinking? This has to be one of the funniest films I've seen. It really made me laugh. Such a simple plot line that had characters you really cared about and were rooting for. My favourite character by far was Rhonda as I saw so much of myself in her. Wonderful film and I will be watching again. Go Toni Colletee, now I understand why your career took off after this film.
