Critics Consensus

Heartfelt and quirky, though at times broad, Muriel's Wedding mixes awkward comedy, oddball Australian characters, and a nostalgia-heavy soundtrack.

Anthony Lane The New Yorker The two fine, edgy performances by Collette and Griffiths keep things afloat. May 15, 2023 Full Review Neil Jillett The Age (Australia) Hogan directs in a bright, sketchy, almost comic-strip style. Yet hi outstanding achievement, the quality that sets Muriel's Wedding apart from the current crop of Australian comedies... is his use of tragic incidents to darken the lightness. Jan 10, 2023 Full Review Duane Byrge The Hollywood Reporter It's funny, strange and, best of all, graced with strong human compassion. Visually, Muriel's Wedding is a bustling blend of wry humor and acerbic social satire. Apr 2, 2020 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...completely (and compulsively) watchable for the duration of its relatively fast-paced running time... Em B The first time I saw this film advertised I was in my teens and it just didn't appeal to me. I decided to watch this many years later and what was I thinking? This has to be one of the funniest films I've seen. It really made me laugh. Such a simple plot line that had characters you really cared about and were rooting for. My favourite character by far was Rhonda as I saw so much of myself in her. Wonderful film and I will be watching again. Go Toni Colletee, now I understand why your career took off after this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Pat B The greatest movie ever made. The entire cast is brilliant, from Toni Collette to Bill Hunter, and Jeanie Drynan. This movie speaks with such honesty and humour and warmth about the loneliness affecting so many of us. We all know a "Muriel" in our own lives, or we've been one ourselves. And who doesn't know a Bill or Betty Heslop? It's, therefore, such a heroic moment to see this character finally stand on her own two feet. "What kind of person marries someone they don't know?" "You did." "I want to win. All my life I've wanted to win." "Me too." This film is pure magic, and I love rewatching it every time. Full marks from me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Leaburn O A pretty decent offbeat Oz comedy. Dark in places and maybe a bit too maudlin towards the end which killed off the upbeat wacky humour of the first half of the film. Felt a bit like an Oz version of 4 weddings. Definitely worthy of cult status because it was low budget but unexpectedly memorable. Watched on Amazon Prime. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Audience Member So good. Very Australian humor. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Munkhjargal A this movie was able to show the difficulty of life from one side. he was under a tyrannical seal and had never even had a respectable date. He escaped to Australia and changed his name to live, although it was difficult, but in a way it was good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Bahad j In my opinion, I felt that the movie was very good, behind all this, the filmmaker was able to come up with the right festive details to congratulate the members of the behind-the-scenes team.
