      Critics Consensus

Heartfelt and quirky, though at times broad, Muriel's Wedding mixes awkward comedy, oddball Australian characters, and a nostalgia-heavy soundtrack.

Will M An Abba induced, happy go lucky comedy-drama set in small town Australia. The film's heroine, Muriel (Toni Collette), escapes her dysfunctional clan in Porpoise Spit for the big city life in Sydney with her fast track gal pal. Muriel captures her 15 minutes of television fame when she agrees to marry a South African swimming champion so he can compete for Australia at the Olympics. There are some dark moments in this otherwise feel good Abba sing along about friendship and youthful independence. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review liam s Muriel's Wedding is one of the most wacky delights of the 90s while still retaining a sense of charm and likability. Toni is an absolute dream to watch and the ABBA soundtrack throughout gives us a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. We also get the line "you're terrible Muriel" over and over. Anthony Lane New Yorker The two fine, edgy performances by Collette and Griffiths keep things afloat. May 15, 2023 Full Review Neil Jillett The Age (Australia) Hogan directs in a bright, sketchy, almost comic-strip style. Yet hi outstanding achievement, the quality that sets Muriel's Wedding apart from the current crop of Australian comedies... is his use of tragic incidents to darken the lightness. Jan 10, 2023 Full Review Duane Byrge Hollywood Reporter It's funny, strange and, best of all, graced with strong human compassion. Visually, Muriel's Wedding is a bustling blend of wry humor and acerbic social satire.
