Shelly Kraicer Cinema Scope Murmur of the Hearts' gorgeous cinematography and lush soundscape create a palpably beautiful environment of nostalgia, longing, and mystery where past, present, fantasy and reality mingle to impressive effect. Oct 2, 2017 Full Review Jocelyn Lee The New Paper (Singapore) Beautifully shot, Murmur explores interpersonal relationships in a dreamy fashion and gets you thinking long after it is over. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2017 Full Review Boon Chan The Straits Times (Singapore) Chang injects some surrealism with a character who pops up unexpectedly in Yu-mei and Yu-nan's lives, but it sits oddly with the rest of the film. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 13, 2016 Full Review Edmund Lee South China Morning Post Murmur of the Hearts is a quiet and sometimes strangely moving story about the search for closure; it is also one of Chang's best directorial efforts to date. Lopez W It explores how painful and traumatizing it is to be a member of a family that is broken and centers on a character who is yearning for closure after being completely torn apart by other people's choices. Not everyone will be able to grasp this movie because it is so complex. There were numerous elements in the movie that you had to pay attention to, therefore it was necessary to have experience and sharp eyesight. Like a poem that has been made into a movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Sylvia Chang tries desperately to piece the together the past and the present and two convoluted stories, but the end result is not entirely satisfying. Characters feel distant even though we get to see the entire upbringing, proving that perhaps the story itself simply isn't crippling enough. For a movie that hangs by the emotion connection with characters, it is a fatal downfall. Also a waste of a strong cast, headlined by the return of Isabelle Leung.
