Rob Nelson Variety Where Walter's film succeeds is in rendering Lutz, onscreen throughout, as an indelibly prickly and unsettling figure. Apr 2, 2013 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter Unusual doc should please both believers and die-hard skeptics. Apr 2, 2013 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times Mr. Lutz prattles on endlessly about the paranormal activity he says he witnessed, the unpleasant family dynamics he grew up with and more. Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 14, 2013 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com The resulting documentary is, at times, unnerving, but more often a subjective exercise that reveals one of America's most famous hauntings to be an overblown façade. Aug 8, 2019 Full Review Amie Simon Three Imaginary Girls Whatever the truth is, the story of that house in Amityville and the boy who spent time in it is FASCINATING, even though we might ever know what really happened. Mar 2, 2019 Full Review Sarah Gopaul Digital Journal There's a sense that this isn't the film Walter expected to make, but given the footage he had he pieced together a movie. Yet in the end, the question remains: Amityville hoax or horror? Oct 22, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

VICTORIA C The main guy is insanely obnoxious. He speaks kind of like a dick to the people speaking to him. Which okay, his experience is extreme. But some of the things made no sense. I think him asking the pyschiatrist about her trauma was a weird aspect to add to his film and could have been done prior to filming. I think him playing his guitar throughout was odd. It feels like someone is holding a gun to his head to be in the film about him. I'm the least sensitive person but Danny is annoyingly obnoxious in every part concerning him having to talk. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Sadie M The trauma that Daniel Lutz suffered in his youth has had a very obvious effect on him. If he were an actor I would call his performance just about Oscar-worthy............but he isn't - he's a man with permanently damaged hands and probably PTSD. By now, most adults know that the Warrens were not always truthful people and that George Lutz and Jay Anson (the author of The Amityville Horror) made up parts of the story for the book, but Daniel Lutz's emotional scars are palpable, the ghost photograph taken during the Warrens' investigation is real (I personally compared it to the photo of the investigator people claim it's really of and their faces and clothing are different), and truth is scarier than fiction. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/17/23 Full Review Jason S The man was not believable and looked and acted very irrational and mean it just seems to many from the past that we’re involved in it from the origin said it’s a hoax. That little boy in the house was not a ghost he was part of the crew Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review David N Well, if there are three ways of looking at this. 1. It's a true story, just like the original Amityville Horror. 2. It's all made up. 3. Wait. Huh? That was supposed to be real? Really? Holy crap!!! If you are in group 2, you probably don't want to watch this. Unless you've got an open mind, you will hate this. If you are group 1 or 3 and think there may be something real here, you will love this. It's actually probably more scary than any of the 28 or so Amityville movies. You can decide which group I'm in. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Ryan R Very interesting story on childhood trauma and abuse and how deeply memory can be influenced. Seems very relevant to conspiracy theorists, religious and spiritual people, and paranormalists who truly believe in their own otherworldly experiences. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie would've played out better as a 30 minute special for Reelz TV, but instead it seems like the filmmakers padded it out into a 90 min runtime just so they could say they had a 'feature length' film. The main character comes across as your typical burned out loser that you avoid at the local bar unless you want to be subjected to listening to the same drunk, nonsensical trash every time. Lorrain Warren is equally, if not more, mentally unhinged, even trying to convince viewers she has a piece of wood from Jesus's cross. Yeah, we believe the lady with roosters in her basement who continues to make money off other people stupid enough to believe her "career" as a "paranormal investigator". It's frustrating to watch the filmmakers try to convince the audience there's more here than meets the eye, when in fact, everyone involved are just more people continuing to make money off George Lutz' piece of fiction about a 'haunted house'. I guess it's better than the newer Amityville movies that the big movie studios keep churning out, but no one seems to care about those either.
