Ken McLaughlin (Roddy McDowall) is a precocious 10-year-old who lives with his family on a remote Wyoming ranch. When Ken returns home from school with failing grades, his father, Rob (Preston Foster), blames the boy's lack of personal responsibility. At the suggestion of his wife, Nell (Rita Johnson), Rob allows Ken to choose a single colt from the herd to raise as his own. Much to his father's dismay, Ken chooses a fiery mustang filly -- but the two soon become fast friends.

Primera adaptación al cine de la novela infantil escrita por Mary O'Hara. La experiencia de ver My Friend Flicka (1943), es casi como ver Lassie pero en versión equina. Vale decir que Flicka (palabra sueca que significa "niñita"), nombre de la potra que se queda "huérfana" luego de un fatal accidente, no es tan carismática como Lassie, y quizás menos inteligente, pero tiene su encanto propio. La dirección corre a cargo de Harold D. Schuster, y la historia básicamente cuenta cómo un niño, Ken (Roddy McDowall, quien interpreta a Cornelius en todas las películas de "Planet of the Apes") forma una entrañable amistad con Flicka, regalo de su padre (Preston Foster), un granjero y criador de caballos. La película es muy pintoresca, llena de hermosos paisajes y bellos caballos. El lazo que Ken y Flicka forman es el del chico que tiene plena confianza en que la potra podrá ser domada. It's a little too sentimental and sugary, too bad they didn't tone it down a bit more. Nice cast to a fine job technically it is good - the cinematography and art direction are particularly good. It's well enough done, just too melodramatic.
