Unfortunately I felt like this was a jump at a successful film career when the information of the 25% relation to someone awful turned famous…. turned trauma dump from her dad whose clearly in a mental turmoil. I couldn’t recommend this to anyone. For her sake I wished someone told her to not do it. See more Listed M @Listed.MIA 3d Went into this doc hopeful. I wanted to see her journey after discovering she's related to one of America's most notorious killers. Instead, I got an endless parade of tears. Almost every scene is another crying session, and after a while it stopped feeling genuine and started feeling performative. After learning her dad's bio father was Charles Manson, she spirals. Suddenly every flaw in her father points back to Manson, and she becomes obsessed with proving how connected they are. She even pushes back against detectives and people who actually knew Manson because she's "done her research" The Rorschach test was especially disturbing, she seemed excited they interpreted one inkblot the same. What bothered me most was that she seemed eager to keep searching for more ways to connect herself to him, I found that incredibly unsettling and, frankly, disrespectful to the victims. I mean, she changes her last name to Maddox, Manson's original family name! Gross. Don't watch. Sucks, cuz they had good interview participants, but blew the interviews and spent half the time talking about herself. What a shame that Hulu should give valuable bitrate over to a film that fails to critically evaluate not only the crazed murderous subject from whom the film takes its name, but also the co-director/star, who in a conversation with a Manson r-word survivor, somehow makes the conversation about herself. I sincerely hope Ms Maddox is never let near a documentary again. See more Misha R @MishaPeach 5d Those of us who’ve spent most of our lives consuming true crime are no strangers to the Manson murders. We know the sensationalized parts of the story, we know about his horrific upbringing, and we know he was personally responsible for only one murder. So, there’s nothing particularly groundbreaking here. The heart of the documentary seems to be a young woman grappling with the shock of discovering who her grandfather was. We watch her damage her relationship with her father, who understandably isn’t thrilled about constantly being compared to his infamous deadbeat dad. The hardest parts to watch were when she tried to hold onto the idea that maybe her grandad “wasn’t such a bad guy.” She listens to one woman describe being sexually assaulted by Manson, only to seemingly downplay the severity of it in the very next scene. As it stands, it felt less like a thoughtful exploration and more like watching someone spiral while trying to build a narrative out of other people’s pain.
