Paul C Was left feeling like wheres the twist? Wheres the sting in the tail? but the credits roll and just felt like it could have been a true story with its real life dullness. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Julee C The first five minutes looked interesting, then downhill from there. The worst part was the ending, where it was so dark you couldn't[ see much of anything; this dragged on for about 15 minutes, even at high speed. Awful film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Mike K Rather confusing storyline in parts. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Dan R 2021's 'My Son' is a well made drama with an intriguing premise, but unfortunately falls apart under its own ambition. SYNOPSIS: 'Edmond receives a call from his estranged ex-wife informing him about his son's disappearance. Determined to find his son, he suspects his ex-wife's new partner and stumbles upon a few truths.' The main selling point of this film is seeing how McAvoy improvises his way through the story with him only receiving small plot points from the director. He absolutely steals the whole film with his performance being nothing short of unhinged and incredible. However, I feel this way of filmmaking actually causes the film some critical problems within its storytelling. Some major plot points are revealed 1/3 of the way through in regards to McEvoy's character to which we're given reasoning for the child's abduction. Unfortunately though, and whether it's the improvisation or shoddy directing that causes the problems, the film goes in a totally different direction and never returns to address those points even though they're plot critical at the time. Its narrative shortcomings eventually spoilt the film for me. It's such a shame considering McAvoy's performance. Disappointing. 5/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Ian M Despite the acting talent and compelling start, there's just a lot of..... Walking around. The plot ghosts over fairly obvious things you'd think have been spotted and all in all it was just very Meh". Dave Golder Radio Times What's left is a rather humdrum thriller, with a thin plot and overwrought performances. Rated: 2/5 Feb 20, 2024 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online The highlight of My Son is easily its acting. Though many may see McAvoy's improvised performance as a gimmick, he stole the show and created a character worth rooting for. Rated: 3/5 Jul 27, 2023 Full Review Whang Yee Ling The Straits Times (Singapore) Pity McAvoy, who was left to improvise. Rated: 2/5 Jun 9, 2022 Full Review Chris Wasser Sunday Independent (Ireland) It's a thinly plotted affair, because it needs to be, and its narrative shortcomings eventually spoil the fun. Rated: 3/5 Jan 27, 2022 Full Review Deirdre Molumby entertainment.ie For all its solid ingredients, the final formula of My Son is let down by a wandering script. You end up with this jumbled up mess of a movie that goes from harrowing, sincere drama to over-the-top revenge thriller. It just doesn't sit right. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 17, 2022 Full Review Gregory Wakeman The National (UAE) My Son is ultimately too lightweight and simply-plotted to be anything more than intriguing.
