zoe f Such a fun short film that addresses the issues women face today. Laughed out loud multiple times. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/14/23 Full Review casnien v It's 1991, and Pam – a stubborn, imaginative 15-year-old from the outskirts of Houston – embarks on a comedic journey of disappointment and self-discovery as she seeks the right boy to lose her virginity with so she can become the fully realized woman she's imagined herself to be. I am not going to review these short films as long as my normal reviews, I am just going to say what I thought of it. My Year of Dicks definitely has a lot of great things going for it, the emotion and for the most part the story, however the animation felt out of place in some scenes, especially in scenes I was emotionally invested in and then suddenly we are going full anime style of animation, overall solid, but could have been so much better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Sarthak B This story of a messy, weird and awkward teen trying to get some action all being told through rotoscope/linklater form of animation is actually quite an experience, exactly what a coming-of-age should be. It was visually perfect, the rotoscope animation was well done and gave an uncanny valley vibe with the frames constantly changing depending on the mood of our main character. Loved the anime bits and a couple body horror elements inserted here and there. On first look, the animation might seem dull and may feel like a wrong decision but it is after a couple minutes that the plot progresses that you realise that this was the only art-style they could've chosen because the awkwardness of the situations on display here (believe me with a title like this, the situations pull no punches) actually amplifies. It was engaging throughout the whole runtime and each chapter was great with something distinct in them that stood out, not a single dull moment. The characters and the conversations they had felt very real, with some astounding voice acting. Reminded me in bits of Don Hertzfeldt's It's Such a Beautiful Day (which is another really great animated feature film you should watch btw) wherein everything being said on-screen has some meaning to it but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're spoon-feeding it to you. You have to understand the subtleties lying within the things being said which is really hard to achieve I think. While the plot felt a bit conventional at time, with a predictable ending, it didn't matter much because I was completely engrossed in what was happening on-screen. This is clearly made by someone who understands what it's actually like to be going through stuff as a teenager and the story is thus actually told from the perspective of one. Teenagers aren't usually serious about stuff and they usually pass-off most serious things as jokes. I'm not saying that's always the right thing to do but that's essentially what happens when you are a teenager and I'm glad the film respects that. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/23 Full Review Adam B I didn't always love the animation styles, which are a mix, but you could tell this was someone's real story, and it was told in a funny way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/23 Full Review Jona I Unique, entertaining, honest Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/23 Full Review Jim L It was great. Really realistic, really funny, and really sweet all at the same time. Great animation, and great job by the actors, especially the lead and the main supporting actors.
