The Mysteries of Pittsburgh

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A listless interpretation of Michael Chabon's first novel, Mysteries of Pittsburgh features none of the source material's charm, but has coming-of-age film cliches in abundance.

Matt Singer The Rumpus The Mysteries of Pittsburgh would play as weak sauce in any context, but it's especially disappointing coming to theaters on the heels of the similarly themed but superiorly made Adventureland. Sep 18, 2017 Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times Shoddy and never credible, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh is an ungainly coming-of-age drama based on a (hopefully much better) novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon. Rated: 2/4 Apr 16, 2009 Full Review Dan Zak Washington Post The Mysteries of Pittsburgh seems to be missing an essential element of drama, of risk, underneath its glossy, golden sheen. Apr 16, 2009 Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Times The Mysteries of Pittsburgh fails on its own terms - not just in comparison with its source material. Rated: 2/4 Dec 8, 2018 Full Review Kevin Carr 7M Pictures boring and aimless Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 2, 2011 Full Review Brian Orndorf DVDTalk.com A mess of a movie, looking to contort Chabon's novel into a darkly personal story of choice and desire. Instead the film sloppily lumbers around in search of a consistent dramatic path. It's handsome enough, just wildly misguided from frame one. Rated: D+ Aug 26, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews

Beatrice B This movie really traumatized me when I was a teen… Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review John A Haven't read the novel so my judgement on this film is far less biased than the harsh reactions found here. I'd say this is a very good-looking and even lightly absorbing piece of coming-of-age fare. The supporting cast is perfect yet somehow the filmmakers couldn't find a very convincing compatible actor to portray 'Art' the main character. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Much better than most give it credit for. A brave and solid film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member WHERE IS ARTHUR. WTF IS THIS. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Nothing you haven't seen before and, in fact, poorly told. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member A lifeless and poorly executed comedy-drama. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
