Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle Rated: 3/5 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It's one of those movies where the setup is unbelievably complicated, and involves a chain of mistaken identities, and we sit patiently in the audience and wait while the writers get all of their ducks in a row. Steve D A sexist uncomfortable script kills it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie, its cool funny and its very well acted. Such a journey and coming of age film for the two actors. i love the story, it was somewhat romantic and just keeps you until the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This is your run of the mill teenage date gone wrong movie ( stolen car, disaster, misunderstanding, chase, parents don't know). It suffers from a silly plot, but is watchable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/18/21 Full Review Audience Member The movie is highly immature and goes everywhere yet no where. It took me two days to watch because I couldn't handle the ridiculous script and story line. The only thing I liked is that Ethan hawke did a pretty good job in the film, and I did enjoy the whole older brother turn bad but I just truly didn't understand what the people were after in the end. Honestly watch but don't. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member From the director of the excellent "Pow Wow Highway" and the producer of the cult classic "Repo Man" comes a bland teen comedy. I suppose it doesn't help that the script is written by the team who brought us the "Super Mario Bros." movie and "Sweet Valley High." The story involves Ethan Hawke getting advice (and a suit and car) from his snaky brother before a big date with Teri Polo, but when he's mistaken for his brother by Chinese mobsters, the film tries really hard at becoming a quirky, screwball comedy. I think I was most entertained by the early 90s period details, like UB40 posters, Jane's Addiction t-shirts, giant cell phones and the pre-grunge 90s fashions. You also have some regular 80s character actors here, including Fisher Stevens, BD Wong, James Hong and Victor Wong, but those elements of nostalgia can only carry a dull film so far.
