James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk standard criminal melodrama, but Browning directs it with enough unique flair (and an insider’s understanding of how the carny game is played) to make it stand out from the crowd, especially when we see it in light of his future films Rated: 3/4 Nov 12, 2023 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness Each one, by nature of the period in which they were released and how audiences responded to them, have a legacy that must be explored, mulled over, and come to terms with if cinema is going to tell honest stories without exploitation. Audience Member This is a rare and interesting Tod Browning film. Much like his Miracles For Sale and to a lesser extent The Thirteenth Chair, it is interested in demystifying the supernatural rather than privileging it. In that regard, there is something interesting at work in these films: Browning's interest in the irrational and in the circus sideshow as metaphor as evidenced in other films like The Unknown is somehow coupled with revealing all the tricks of the trade as it were. Maybe that is the definitive Browning gesture? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
