Frans B Nice to watch a "cheesy" movie that doesn't rely on shock and awe to make an impression. Just a good story, great cinematography and excellent cast who all shines in their characters. Looks and feels real, not plastic like so many high scorers. Relaxed take on life as it is. It continues to get watched because of the actors in it- some big names in an early start. And if you know the area, you watch it, because you love Mystic, and the movie shoots the location in a gorgeous way- everyone gets a taste of one of the best New England towns. I though the story was weak and lacked pace. Far too much of it just feels ordinary, and the cheesy musical score just makes it worse. Julia Roberts can be amazing with the right script, but sadly not in this movie. There are some high lights, like the pool hustler scene and the hitch hiking scene but there are not enough of them. There are a lot of night time scenes which lack definition due to mediocre lighting and grainy film. It may have seemed better in 1988, but now it looks dated and sub prime. It's not terrible, just ordinary. An all-star cast once again shows how special effects can dazzle, but heartfelt emotions and down-to-earth dialogue keep audiences invested in characters and their struggles. Surprising newcomer Matt Damon also makes his on-screen debut, and in a fantastic character study as the titular pizza.
