Craving connection with others, Nancy creates elaborate identities and hoaxes under pseudonyms on the internet. When she meets a couple whose daughter went missing 30 years ago, fact and fiction begin to blur in Nancy's mind, and she becomes increasingly convinced these strangers are her real parents. As their bond deepens, reasonable doubts give way to willful belief - and the power of emotion threatens to overcome all rationality.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Nancy is an uncomfortable watch, but worth the effort thanks to Andrea Riseborough's central performance -- and writer-director Christina Choe's powerful empathy for her character's dangerously misguided choices.

Nell Minow AWFJ.org This haunting story of identity and the longing for family has achingly real performances, especially J. Smith-Cameron and John Leguizamo. The snowy setting in the final scenes is beautifully filmed and very fitting. Oct 12, 2021 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The overwhelming screen charisma of Andrea Riseborough is just about strong enough to prevent this identity drama from derailing into art house obscurity. Rated: 3/5 Oct 12, 2018 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Good performances and interesting, though undeveloped narrative ideas in this debut feature from writer-director Christina Choe. Rated: 3/5 Oct 11, 2018 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The dueling tensions of the film are quite fascinating. Rated: 4/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Cate Marquis AWFJ.org In Nancy, director Christina Choe spins out her intriguing yarn with careful precision, keeping us guessing about Nancy and about whether she is the long-lost daughter. Oct 12, 2021 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson AWFJ.org Kudos to Andrea Riseborough for her wonderfully ambiguous performance, which never lets us come to a definite conclusion about just how sorry for her we should feel. Diana S Seemed like she was trying to humanize go-fund-me scammers, and while the story was compelling, something was missing that I can't quite put my finger on. I guess I wanted to see her career as a con artist intersect more directly with her need for connection, and I waited, but it never happened. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Seriously, who the hell films movies in 4:3 aspect ratio since like 2008?! And this movie was made in only 2018. It’s probably the ONLY thing filmed in that square view in the past five years.l, and then it switches to 16:9 randomly, for whatever reason. Seriously, why? But even worse, it’s listed as a thriller, and there’s nothing about it that makes it one. This is a DRAMA FOR LIFETIME, NOT A THRILLER IN ANY WAY! You expect that there’s going to be some conflict surprise you at some point, but instead, the movie just ends without really answering any of the questions it raised in the first place. Another one of those movies where the biggest surprise is when the credits just start to roll unexpectedly and leave you saying “WTF?!?!” Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow but thoroughly competent and well done, steadily improving as it gets closer and closer to the heart of the story. Okay... that was strange. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Decent drama. Pretty simple, not a lot of excitement but worth a watch if you’re alone scrolling for something to get into. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A highly intense movie that has a great story but a really disappointing ending.
