Critics Consensus

Emma Roberts is bubbly and charming as Nancy Drew, the junior detective. But despite her best efforts, Nancy Drew still lacks excitement, surprise, and compelling secondary characters.

Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) There's something very weird about Andrew Fleming's movie, perhaps because it's essentially The Black Dahlia for tweens, with kissing but without the sex or mutilation. Oct 19, 2007 Full Review Robert Hanks Independent (UK) Carolyn Keene's straitlaced teen detective gets a modern, ironic makeover, but the irony wobbles and the jokes aren't strong enough to carry it. Oct 19, 2007 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian For sheer objectionable stupidity and dullness, this film takes the biscuit. Matthew D Emma Roberts is absolutely adorable as the chic detective Nancy Drew. Director Andrew Fleming’s (The Craft) family mystery comedy Nancy Drew (2007) is a wonderful blast from the past. Fleming’s direction is very fast and playful with an engaging mystery. He gives us all the clues and lets our imagination run wild with the possible solutions as things unravel. Writers Tiffany Paulsen and Andrew Fleming came up with a cool mystery about a dead actress, her haunted mansion, and a missing will. I had so much fun revisiting this delightful movie. Casting director Pam Dixon cast the perfect Nancy Drew in Emma Roberts. I love that Rachael Leigh Cook and Bruce Willis have roles in this one. Emma Roberts is super cute and precocious as the preppy sleuth Nancy Drew. She delivers lines with a furious speed. Her perky personality fits Nancy Drew for a bubbly, entertaining lead performance. Roberts is one of my favorite actresses ever since I saw Nancy Drew as a kid. I cared about her as she is constantly put in danger. Emma Roberts excels at comedy, drama, and mystery in Nancy Drew. Rachael Leigh Cook is so sweet and brave as the lost daughter Jane Brighton. Cook is so cool for guest starring in Nancy Drew. Josh Flitter’s chubby comedy relief character Corky Veinshtein is funny and silly. Max Thieriot is very nice and protective as Nancy Drew’s love interest boy Ned Nickerson. Tate Donovan is amusing as the worried father Carson Drew. Marshall Bell is wonderful as the old caretaker John Leshing. Laura Harring is stunning as usual as the ghost of actress Dehlia Draycott. Barry Bostwick gets a great supporting role as the lawyer Dashiel Zachary Biedermeyer. Daniella Monet’s jealous bully Inga Veinshtein and Kelly Vitz’ schoolgirl mean girl Trish are fun side characters. Bruce Willis’ friendly cameo as himself is great like Adam Goldberg’s mean director. Chris Kattan’s goofy burglar is a riot in the cold opening. Lindsay Sloane’s sassy saleswoman. Editor Jeff Freeman’s swift cutting makes for a lively adventure. Cinematographer Alexander Gruszynski’s striking wide shots and medium shots really just follow Emma Roberts around. The moody lighting by James Plannette looks awesome for such a small movie. Production designer Tony Fanning’s big manor set is gorgeous. Todd Cherniawsky’s art direction and Kathy Lucas’ fancy furnishings look spectacular. Composer Ralph Sall’s moody jazz score is insanely cool for Nancy Drew. It feels old time-y, but with a pleasant modern freshness. Sound designer Gregory King, Doug Hemphill, Shaughnessy Hare, Ron Bartlett, Yann Delpuech, and Eric Flickinger capture car horns, explosions, and screams throughout Nancy Drew. Costume designer Jeffrey Kurland’s adorable outfits for Emma Roberts are iconic. He nails Nancy Drew’s preppy and chic style. Makeup by Julie Hewett and Julie Kristy for Emma Roberts is so cute and natural on her. The sleek, straight hairstyling for Emma Roberts by Marie Larkin Medusah and Soo-Jin Yoon looks immaculate. In all, Emma Roberts is fabulous as the teenage detective Nancy Drew in one of her cutest movies. It’s a wonderful 99 minute family film that’s always fun to revisit.
