william k Despite some great mountaineering cinematography, the actual tragedy gets a more cursory than emotional treatment. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The German movie is based on a true story of alpinists Reinhold Messner and his younger brother Gunter Messner. The younger brother was lost when descending the Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas after they reached its summit through Rupal Face in 1970 for the first time in the world. The accident was on trial and was not widely told to the public for a long time until the body of the younger brother was found in 2005. It showed that Reinhold Messner was right though he had lost the trial by then. I guess the movie is made to recover honor of Reinhold Messner who is the one and only alpinist being on top of all the 14 peaks higher than 8000m in the world. Nanga Parbat shot from the air in the opening credit is extremely beautiful but steep, precipitous and almost perpendicular. It's just like God who is noble but keeps himself above all the vulgarity around him. It's not strange if people fall in love with the mountain at a first sight and want to be on its top. Difficulties to overcome are beyond imagination. They must be stoic as well as passionate. Otherwise God will punish for them to carry a cross through their lives. This may be a story of the mountain like God rather than the alpinist. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member The poor equipment used is what impressed me most, if compare with nowadays gears... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member There is some debate about which version this story tells but apart from that it is a pretty good mountaineering movie. Although not as good as Nordwand it is still worth a look Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is based on the true story Reinhold Messner and his brother Gunther's tragic ascent to the titular mountain. I didn't know much about the film going in and what follows is a fairly straightforward story about man vs. nature and trying to survive. It's not a bad film. It features some stunning cinematography and on-location work plus Gustavo Santaollala's score is superb. But I've seen it done better ("Touching the Void," for example). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Nanga Parbat zeigt den willensstarken Ausnahmebergsteiger Reinhold Messner, dessen Stärken vor allem sein Sturkopf, seine unglaubliche physische Belastbarkeit, aber auch seine absolute Team-Unfähigkeit sind. Was Messner im Alleingang so stark macht, schwächt das Nanga-Parbat-Team tödlich. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
