Critics Consensus

The Nanny Diaries' miscast lead and unrealistic, one-dimensional characters make this class satire far less effective than it should've been.

Deborah Ross The Spectator What is this film about? Nothing. It's senseless and horrid, patronising to all women everywhere, and extremely tiresome. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Alonso Duralde MSNBC Here's hoping that the very talented [Shari] Springer [Berman] and [Robert] Pulcini get a crack at a script that's worthy of their talents for their third time at bat. Matthew D Scarlett Johansson charms in a very delightful comedy-drama that is very 2000’s in style. Directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s romantic comedy-drama The Nanny Diaries (2007) is quite wonderful. Scarlett Johansson grows up, falls in love, takes care of a spoiled brat, and deals with the boss from hell. Writers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini have very funny jokes and keep things upbeat until the devastating dramatic scenes that hit hard. It’s quite relatable if you’ve ever worked in customer service or a dead end job. Berman and Pulcini’s direction is playful and quirky for a neat narrated framed story that gives all the sympathy towards long suffering nannies. Scarlett Johansson is adorable as Annie Braddock, the nanny heroine and narrator. Johansson is already lovely, funny, and moving here with a very natural and empathetic performance. Annie goes through so much and Scarlett puts on a brave face through every humiliation. She feels brave and wise despite being so young in The Nanny Diaries. Laura Linney is monstrous as Annie’s cruel and unloved boss Mrs. X. You see her misery in her marriage gets sent spiraling into disdain and revenge on her worker nanny Annie as payback for her husband’s infidelities. Paul Giamatti is loathsome as the dismissive and sleazy Mr. X. He’s clearly doing an impression of the grotesque Harvey Weinstein, who was a producer on the movie. Alicia Keys is so gorgeous and radiant as Annie’s sweet friend Lynette. I wish she was actually more present to see her bubbly character more. Keys could certainly have acted in more movies as she feels pretty natural to me. Chris Evans is funny and very handsome as the kind neighbor and Scarlett’s love interest Hayden the Harvard Hottie. Donna Murphy is good as Annie’s very mean and judgmental mother Judy Braddock, who never even tries to understand her daughter’s suffering and embarrassment as she only thinks of her daughter’s accomplishments as an extension of herself. Nicholas Reese Art is wild and repulsive as the demonic rich boy Grayer Addison X. He is so chaotic and misbehaved because his awful apathetic rich parents ignore him, turning him into a sickeningly disobedient child. Editor Robert Pulcini’s swift cuts and cinematographer Terry Stacey’s strikingly crisp shots look great. The Nanny Diaries’ 106 minutes feels more like 30 to me. Steve Ramsey’s bright lighting and composer Mark Suozzo’s delicate score all fit the pleasant vibes of The Nanny Diaries. Michael Wilkinson’s costumes for Scarlett are super cute. In all, The Nanny Diaries is like Scarlett Johansson getting her own Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, Maid in Manhattan, or Uptown Girls. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review mark g Geez, this was bad. Johansen, who I love, is absolutely sleepwalking through this mess. And who can blame her, the movie is a bore. Evans, who I also like is also picking up a paycheck here. Then there is the ending, where Johansen is doing a voice over, and she shows zero inflection or passion, sounds like she is reading the ingredients off a soup can. Perfectly sums up this uninspired film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/12/25 Full Review Stephen C Funny in 1 hour and 44 minutes!!!!!!!!! Rated PG-13 for Language!!!!!!!!!!
