Neil Young Trunk Show

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It'll likely prove impenetrable for the uninitiated, but Jonathan Demme's second Neil Young documentary presents a less contemplative side of its subject -- and a loud, passionate glimpse of a rock legend at work.

Elizabeth Weitzman New York Daily News Demme beautifully captures the show's casual intimacy. Rated: 5/5 Apr 6, 2010 Full Review Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch For better or worse, this is a straightforward performance film. I feel it's for the worse. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 1, 2010 Full Review Stephen Cole Globe and Mail Like all true filmmakers, Demme also has an eye for telling details. Rated: 4/4 Mar 26, 2010 Full Review Tricia Olszewski Washington City Paper You forget you're watching a movie and instead feel like you've got the best seat in the house. Apr 9, 2010 Full Review National Post Rated: 4/4 Apr 1, 2010 Full Review Jim Slotek Jam! Movies The nitpicky reservations I have of Jonathan Demme's unadorned (some would call it lazy) concert film, Neil Young Trunk Show, do not offset my full-out recommendation that Young fans run right out and see it. Audience Member Seeing Ambulance Blues live was incredible. I got mildly annoyed that a lot of the guitar playing shots were of Neil Young's face. I would have rather have seen what he was doing. "Mellow My Mind" on 6-string banjo was badass too. And the jams on "No Hidden Path" and "Like A Hurricane".... great stuff. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member If you like Neil Young's music you will like this show. If you don't like his music, then what are you doing watching this? The Neil Young fan will appreciate the closeups, the chance to watch Neil Young perform in solo and with his present band and the brief glimpses of Neil backstage. The burning question about this movie: What's with the red phone on stage? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Combining footage from two Upper Darby, Penn., shows in 2007, Trunk Show is a decidedly different beast than Heart of Gold, and all the better for it. Whereas the first film was majestic and slick, Trunk Show is far more intimate, with a purposefully shabby look and off-the-cuff feel. Instead of long tracking shots or swooping pans of excitable audience members, Demme uses a mix of hand-held digital cameras and Super 8 film to capture Young's raw and spontaneous performance. Fans expecting a Last Waltz-like experience, complete with candid interviews, will be surprised, but not disappointed -- whenever Young is performing, it's impossible to desire anything as superficial as backstage antics. Using the "trunk show" theme, Young fills his stage with a plethora of junk yard-like props, instruments, and even a painter (Eric Johnson) who unveils a different canvas for each new song on the set list. The end result is like a travelling circus, with the aging troubadour as its ringmaster.
