Elias Savada Film International Spiritual and haunting in its low decibel manner, the New England coming-of-age drama Neptune is an indie effort that follows a young teenager's soul-searching excursion along a disconcerting and sometimes allegorical path. Kevin L Good film. Felt a little light in overall effect. There's cleary themes and ideas here about religous fervor and the inherent sense of moral superiority the clergy often possess, loss of family and the void it leaves, and the dynamic between Hannah and the character of Jerry. Much of the movie, though, uses dream sequences and quiet meditative scenes of Hannah alone with her thoughts. Not sure that works so well. The acting is fine. There's a cast of unknown actors, which can fluctuate in how effective they are. I did like the short appearance of Maureen Butler as Kay. She let 'ol Jerry know what she thought of his magic oil. But it's Jane Ackerman as Hannah that carries the movie. Nice work by her and director Derek Kimball establishing her as a character growing from the obedient orphan in the church to an adolescent with a mind to think for herself and question what doesn't sit right with her. The visual work is a plus. The dream/daydream sequences have that ethereal feel of a state between conscious waking reality and a surreal quality. And the scenes out fishing for lobster on the water made for a strong sense of place, culture and natural wonder. 3 stars Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Audience Member Set on remote island gives the tragic drowning heft and propels main character out of her childhood with foster minister into a family that wecomes her. The minister has used her to do chores and support him at services. He is furious when she helps someone else. He locks her in a closet, and that is the beginning of the end of her time with him.
