Ed . Zero viewers for Nero Wolfe This was a TV movie made by Paramount for ABC in 1977 and hoped as a pilot for a TV series to star the Prince of Paul Masson. Orson Welles declined due to his inability at this point to memorize lines. Character actor Thayer David was hired instead. ABC shelved the movie for about 2 years, finally showing it at midnight on December 18, 1979, a year and a half after David's passing. Brandon Tartikoff brought the TV series to NBC in 1981 starring William Conrad. I was a loyal viewer of the brief 1981 series and, thanks to YouTube, found the earlier TV movie. Frankly, with a different cast, I would not have enjoyed it due to a less than enthralling plot. However, thanks to the talents of Thayer David, Tom Mason as Archie Goodwin and Anne Baxter, I find this to be pleasant, lighthearted entertainment. Have no grander expectations and you'll appreciate this as well. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
