Dana Stevens New York Times The first feature film by Bilge Ebiri, a New York Magazine film critic, is an unusual hybrid, a surreal 'cubicle comedy' that subtly morphs into a paranoid thriller. Rated: 3/5 Nov 10, 2004 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post This is Ebiri's first feature after directing four shorts. He shows talent, but shouldn't give up his day job just yet. Rated: 2/4 Nov 10, 2004 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg Village Voice From the co-workers' macho hazing rituals to the pseudo-arty gotcha ending, New Guy never quite locates a sensibility to call its own. Nov 9, 2004 Full Review David Sterritt Christian Science Monitor Alas, the movie is less clever than its characters. Rated: 1/4 Nov 11, 2004 Full Review Maitland McDonagh TV Guide Performances are solid and the washed-out, blue-tinged cinematography lends a sickish aura to the soul-eroding cubicles, offices and conference rooms that all too vividly evoke the mind-set of depressed wage slaves. Rated: 3/5 Nov 10, 2004 Full Review Christopher Null Filmcritic.com Combining the elements of comedy and thriller isn't easy, especially for a first-timer. But Ebiri pulls it off. Audience Member For something that I picked up for a laugh in my local Poundland, this movie turned out to be a rather pleasant surprise. It takes the theme of being ganged-up on by new colleagues and runs with it as far as it can go. While it's not going to win any Oscars any time soon, it's definitely worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I didn't have high expectations for this movie, but I actually quite enjoyed it for the most part. I'm a big fan of black comedy and this film fits into that category well. It's low budget and cheesy, but it's also just creepy enough, in a mundane way, that it kept me interested. I wish it had had a better ending, but overall I liked it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Like Office Space if it were directed by David Lynch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie is very unusual. What starts as a relatable office comedy ends as something completely inexplicable. I'm inclined to think the entire movie is a metaphor. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
