Against the backdrop of the race riots that gripped Los Angeles during the early '90s, love blossoms between two unlikely people: Matt (Christian Campbell), a young white man from the Midwest who is struggling as an artist; and Evelyn (Jonelle Allen), an older black single mother who's barely scraping by. While their relationship is tested early by the incredulous, at times hostile environment of South Central L.A., other obstacles include Matt's former flame and Evelyn's no-good ex-boyfriend.
