Critics Consensus

Tough and timely, Nina Wu takes a fittingly -- and purposely -- upsetting look at the seedy underbelly of show business.

Ela Bittencourt Hyperallergic In its desire to avoid cliches, Nina Wu skips over the more complex fallout of sexual trauma. Aug 3, 2021 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This movie is just terrific. It's incredibly stylish and you feel off guard the entire time you're watching it. Apr 6, 2021 Full Review Angie Han FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Stylish, spiky, disturbing and complicated. Apr 6, 2021 Full Review Phil Guie Film-Forward.com The film manages never to strain credibility, mostly due to how well it establishes Nina’s sense of isolation while parceling out salient details. Hough Vague Visages Nina Wu isnt just a "MeToo" thriller or slow burn cinema, it's a progressive spin on psychological horror and a master class in visceral visual design. gregor k Nightmarish reprocessing of abuse and rape of an actress in the movie business. The story lingers between dreams, movies and reality, blurring the distinctions. A very disturbing but plain account of a long ignored structural problem of the dream industry. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review steve c We need a purge of certain kinds of animals in movie industries all over the world Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review brent m How far will one go to achieve success? That's the question put to an aspiring Taiwanese actress who has been struggling for years for a breakthrough. But, now that a big opportunity has emerged, can she bring herself to do what's asked of her? And can she do so if the requirements go against her own sensibilities? "Nina Wu" addresses these issues both through her own direct experience, as well as the images of her vivid dreams, bringing her face to face with herself, her internal conflicts and her ability to push her own limits, themes reminiscent of films like "Black Swan" (2010). Director Midi Z's latest is never dull, providing viewers with a captivating tale through its many changes of mood, quirky humor and fine performances, even if it does begin to lose control of the room somewhat toward the end. Nevertheless, audiences will hang on every frame as they wonder where this evocative character study is going and how it will all turn out. While this may be one of the stranger offerings of recent years, it's freshness, timeliness and distinctiveness are curiously and eminently satisfying.
